Can anyone help in my search for Fredrick Peter Smith?

He was born 1861. in Wickham Durham. He married Sarah Jane Marshall in 1883, who was born 1863 in Seaham. I can find no trace on census forms of peter which leads me to belive in the family story that he was a seaman. I have obtained a copy of their marriage certificate but his occupation is to blurred to read properly but the best I can make of it is he was a Fireman. Peters father was also called Peter and his mother was Anna. Hoping someone has some information , Frank Hobbs. p.s. the connection is on my wifes side .
