Yes that is the family. I would really like Alice to be Ulric Herbert as he gets born in Leeds in 1874 and I have been told that John Noble is his father and that he (Ulric) turns up in Bradley, whereas there is no GRO for Alice around then in Leeds!!

Thank you Gladys and Jeanette, I have finished peeling two pan loads of dodgy potatoes and can now concentrate on more important matters!
Last point first, John the lodger is not John Noble, who I am told went off to America but I understood that was later. However much of the info I have been given by the descendant of this family has proved to be innacurate so perhaps Margaret being husbandless with the children in Bradfield in 1891 is because John Noble has already gone?
I am so pleased you have found Ulric and in laws to investigate - that should provide tomorrow's 'fix'

Thank you for your latest offerings. Whilst you have been chasing down the Herberts I have been trying to get a fix on Margaret Ann Barton. I have had no siting, on my 1:25,000 map of Darwen/Blackburn, of Aiyburth or any name that could conceivably be what has been mis-transcribed. However there is a possibility that Over Darwen could be Lower Darwen, even closer to Blackburn than the main town of Darwen.
