There is a small section on the Canadian Forestry Corps on pp 499-500 of GWL Nicholson's "Official History of the Canadian Army in the First World War":

Thanks Margaret, I didn't really think there would be, but you get used to finding obscure things on the net that you have to ask,

Take care, Jennifer

I've seen that question asked many times on these boards, Jennifer, and the answer has always been, no, no lists of those returning to England.

Back to the Drawing Board!!

I have just done what I should have done ages ago and googled!! I have found an obituary for the Cyril William Clayton who was married to Joyce Botting (see above) . It is for 1950 in Canada so he can't be mine as our Cyril came back to England c1930 and stayed there.

At least I can now reassure my friend that her grandfather didn't commit bigamy and that there must have been 2 men of the same name.

Jennifer

PS Is there any way do you know of finding Passenger Lists for returnees to England?

Margaret, I found someone else that I was looking for. His surname was Laroque. The papers tell me he was born in Verdun, France, was a 'Bushman' in Canada and was only 5'2". I can just see this small, dark wiry man.

He was in the Forestry Commision and was in Cumberland, logging for wood for the trenches. He married a great aunt.

You're a soul mate, Belle!
I just love those little extras on the attestation papers, I think it brings a person to life, knowing hair colour etc. I particularly like the scars and tattoos. And to see a person's actual signature is a treasure!

I have just looked at the Attestation Papers. What a good site. There are scanned images so I can see his signature, height, hair colour, dob, scars etc.

Now going to see if I can find one of my ancestors in the database

Thanks

Lisa, we have a dog who is 14, which is about 98 in human terms. So he is in old man mode which means waking us up so he can 'GO' about 3-4 times in the night, so you have my sympathy.

I have found who I think could be the Clayton family in 1901 in London.:
20 Oaklands Rd, Hanwell, Middlesex
Mark W Clayton age 31, gen labourer born Southall, Middlesex
Harriet age 32, wife born London City
Cyril W Clayton age 4 born Hanwell, Middlesex
Albert E age 2 born Hanwell.
Helen Goodall sister in law age 25, cook/domestic born Peckham, Surrey
William H Goodall brother in law age 18, gen lab born Peckham Surrey.

Now another kind soul found me this:
Ontario, Canada Marriages, 1857-1924
about Cyril Wm Clayton
Name: Cyril Wm Clayton
Birth Place: England
Age: 23
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1896
Father Name: Mark Wm Clayton
Mother Name: Harriett Goodall Clayton
Spouse Name: Joyce Botting
Spouse's Age: 24
Spouse Estimated Birth Year: abt 1895
Spouse Birth Place: England
Spouse Father Name: Wm Edward Botting
Spouse Mother Name: Botting
Marriage Date: 6 Sep 1919
Marriage Place: Wentworth
Marriage County: Wentworth
Family History Library Microfilm: MS932_488

Which is obviously the same person but is he the one who married Ada Wright?? Either his first wife died or he committed Bigamy or there are 2 Cyril Clayton.

My friend's mother who is the daughter of Ada and Cyril died in 1972 when my friend was only 16 so we have only scanty details to go on.

Thanks again, Jennifer

Margaret: :))))))

Thank you for the laugh. :)))) I had some dental work done and together with the kitty, the tooth aches and meowing did me in. "Jaws" (kitty) is 14 years old and has taken to meowing every night for about 2 hours. The vets can't suggest anything.

Jennifer, I was still trying to find more info and missed your postings (til now). If you had asked for our sun a few days ago I would have been more than happy to send it as the temperature was hovering between 90 and 100 degrees for more than one week. I can't stand heat. It's cooled down now, but I guess I'd still be willing to sharing the sun with you folks over there. :)

Margaret, still chuckling here. :))

Lisa, thanks so much for the replies. As far as I know (I am doing this for a friend) Cyril was English.

I will follow up on all your tips and will get back to you.

Weather b******y awful here in England, we could do with some Californian sun.

On this site:

http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/cef/001042-100.01-e.php

There are attestation papers for Cyril William Clayton, born 26 Nov. 1896, London, England. next-of-kin is Mrs. Mark William Clayton, 375 Beach Rd., Hamilton, Ontario. he was a machinist. He enlisted 12 Sep. 1915, Hamilton, ON.

Possibly found Cyril's attestation papers (having contact lenses troubles, it LOOKS like the address is Hamilton). I'm assuming there was only one Cyril Clayton living in Hamilton, born around the time Ada was born:
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/cef/001042-100.01-e.php

(You can view the actual papers. It looks like he was Church of England. I'm almost positive that's the religion my rellie was; I can try to find the certificate later, if you think this is your Cyril and you would like the address.)

I was googling and it jogged my memory.

Years ago, I asked for and received a marriage certificate from a church office in Ontario. I knew the religion, wrote to the office, paid a small fee (small, in those days), and received the certificate.

Hopefully, this link will work:

I've not been able to find any marriages in Ontario after 1925. The following site has marriages to that date, however, most of my rellies/ancestors are not listed (and we're from Ontario).
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~onvsr/

Does the child have an unusual name; if so, you could try googling the name.

I didn't see Cyril on the 1911 or 1901 census. But, perhaps, he wasn't living in Ontario during that time.

Yesterday someone successfully found a link for a marriage in Vancouver. Could someone help with a marriage and a birth in Hamilton as follows:

Ada Wright to Cyril Clayton.

Ada went to Canada in 1923 and her first child was born in Hamilton in April 1927.
The family were back in UK by 1931

Thanks in advance, Jennifer
