No problem -I love a mystery to solve -if Sunderland turns out to be right I'd appreciate hearing

Again what can I say? Ann, Gillian thanks so much for your efforts. I've got lots of information to sort through now and can go off to the local history centre with some set ideas rather than looking through anything and everything.
I can't thank you enough as this side of the family has been a complete mystery to us until now.
Kindest regards

this is my final throw - Arnolds birth might be registered as
male lloyd 1843 sep q kidderminster
presumably his parents hadnt settled on a name at the time

There is a further and stronger possibility in an Elizabeth Sunderland who appears in 1871 aged 21 born Woverhampton living with her mother Harriet (60 Washerwoman) in Kidderminster. She is not on the BMD as having married 1870s and does not appear in later censuses
There is a birth for Georgina Sunderland 1870 Jun Q Kidderminster.
So I wonder if Georgina was reg in her mothers name and then took Arnolds name when they set up home together
The birth cert for Beatrice should either confirm this or shoot it down in flames!

GillianMac Report 1 Sep 2008 14:25

I would suggest you getthe birth cert for Beatrice with these detials
Beatrice Lloyd b 1886 Sptember Quarter Vol 6c page 224
That will give you Elizabeths maiden name

1901 afer Arnolds death
Elizabeth LLoyd 52 wid housewife brtplace NK
Lily 23 Spinner carpet mill
Alice 21 Spinner carpet mill
Walter 20 Farm Lab
Alfred 17 Hawker
Beatrice 16 Spinner carpet mill
Thomas 12
Charles 10 all children b Kidderminster

I too found the Stourbridge marrriage but discounted it as neither bride was an Elizabeth but now I wonder if the marriage failed and he mada new life with Elizabeth but never married her -divorce was almost impossible in those days for ordinary folk.

There is an Elizabeth Hamlet b1855 Wolverhampton living Kidderminster in 1871 who is a poss but she married 1878 Kidd and although there are not enough bridegrooms for all the brides I cant find a Lloyd on same page

Teresa,

A bit more digging!

George Lloyde married Maria Wiggin Dec 1833 in Worcestershire.

The above "rebeckha" (1841 census) was christened 7th Oct 1835 as Rebecca LLoyde. As you can see in the above 1841 census a visitor Elizabeth Wiggins must be Maria's sister I would think. So you have 3 different spellings of the surname!

The birth for Georgina in 1865 given by Jackie is not the right one as that one is in 1871 shown as daughter of Mary who describes herself as Bargemans wife -they live in Arley Kings (reg dist Martley) not Kidderminster and appear in censuses there later
Havent been able to find a birth for Georgina 1870/72 Kidderminster

Gillian,

You may be on the right track here, as I was also thinking the same re another marriage. Although lloyd is a common surname Arnold is not, for that time period, and there was a marriage of a Arnold Lloyd in 1863 at Stourbridge which is a few miles from Walsall where he was living in 1861, the death hits the button for the birth year 1843...I wonder?

Wow what a response in such a short space of time, thank you so much all of you.
Jaqueline thank you for such an in depth answer,
Ann - this is quite possibly him as I believe Elizabeth was born in Wolverhampton so not so difficult for them to have met.
Gillian, quite perplexing not to find him in 1871 I agree he should be around somewhere.
Again huge thanks to one and all.

Death Arnold LLoyd 1898 Sep Q Kidderminster

Cant find him 1871 despite searching on just name or surname nor can I find a marriage to Elizabeth -if she is the mother of Georgina the marriage should be before 1870/1872 but I wonder if there was a prior marriage as there is quite a gap between Georgina and the next child.

Hi This is Arnold's son, one of my great grandmothers siblings, Thanks you.

Teresa

Teresa Report 31 Aug 2008 18:21

Please forgive me a not uncommon name I know. Arnold was my gg grandfather. In 1881 and 1891 he was living in Kidderminster with his wife Elizabeth (do not know her maiden name - yet! and their children. On the 2 census he has ages of 27 and 45 respectively giving him 2 different birth years (1854 or 1846).
Other than getting hold of his birth cert and marriage cert can anyone help find him earlier then this, his father and mother or even his wife's maiden name? All help and suggestions appreciated.
Thank you.
