I am trying to trace Charles Smith (my great grandfather) who (may have) married Ellen Ward about 1900 and who had children Edward, James, Jessica, Katherine and Roland. He lived in London (Tottenham) and ran a Building business. C Smith and Son. Possible died in Benfleet, Essex date unknown.

Had no luck so far. Can anyone help?

Thank you for that information Nerine and Mavis. Really appreciate the help for someone new to this. Mavis ... my grandfather was born a year later and it has laid a family rumour that Charles 'lived in sin' with Ellen/Helen.
