Nerine, I will order this birth certificate to see if it throws any light on the subject.

Nerine, This seems most likely.
Thank you for all the information. I seem to be more and more confused. It is not easy to piece things to-gether if it is not straight forward.

Lindsey, The census information could be what I am looking for. I have a marriage certificate for Edward Kettle and Susan Kettle. The father of Edward is William Kettle.

Thank you

Just a thought
Could Maryann be Edwards Cousin and got pregnant at 14 years old ,and thats why she is in the same household

how about looking at the 1861 census to see if she is there.

she would be about 4 then

I agree with Lindsey......unable to tie anything concrete up on census's.

Something a bit fishy I think...

The shoebox thing is from ancestry ,,, ignore it.
My thoughts are veering towards brother and sister ???
Unless she is a half sister, Shock horror, but not uncommon, maybe a copy of that marriage cert might help. I must admit its a difficult family to follow through the censuses, so you are right to suspect something is amiss.

Gwendoline

Gwendoline Report 26 Aug 2008 20:55

Lindsey I am confused, Could Edward and Mary Ann be brother and sister. Then they had a son and he was called William after Edward's father.
I do not understand the beginning about saving this record to Ancestry and shoebox.

Are you 100% sure of your grandfather's birthdate and that he didn't have a middle name?

This looks like the birth of the William in the census above. Could this be yours, rather than the one born 1871?

Births June 1872
KETTLE William Henry Grantham 7a 459

Hello Lindsey,
I do not think this is the one I am looking for. William was born 9 October 1871. His father was called Edward and mother Mary Ann.
Thank you for looking though.

I have this marriage certificate, but as I am looking for a Mary Ann Kettle, I do not think this is the right one. Unless she was called Susan Mary Ann or Mary Ann Susan. Do you think this is one of the same person
