My ex-husband is David Clayton, son of William John Clayton born 1908, son of Samuel Clayton. William John Clayton and his brother Harry were builders in the West Midlands area and their mother was called Sarah Jane or possibly Mary Jane. She also had a daughter Daisy who married Doug Pope, real name Elvid Pope, I think, from Wales. Does this help your search

Eric - thanks for your offer, which I will be taking up!

Catherine - one of the problems I have found with Saddleworth is that sometimes events were registered as Yorkshire and sometimes as Lancashire. I will keep the info on file, though, because Clayton is a W. Yorkshire name so there's bound to be some links somewhere. Thanks for all your help!

Emma.

Only marriage I could find for Samuel to Jane .......:-

SAMUEL CLAYTON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Marriage: 07 JUL 1833 Calverley, Yorkshire, England
Spouse: JANE JACKSON

Possible death for Samuel Clayton:-
Deaths Sep 1838 (>99%)
Clayton Samuel Bradford _ * *
The district of Bradford covers the Civil Parish of Calverley.
As a matter of interest (or not) it also covers the Civil Parish of 'Clayton'.

Had a look for all Jane's born Yorkshire 1801-1805 father Mark:-

JANE VARLEY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 31 JAN 1801
Gender: Female Christening: 08 FEB 1801 Providence Or Ebenezer Chapel Dagger Lane-Congregakingston Upon H, Kingston Upon Hull, Yorkshire, England
Father: MARK VARLEY
Mother: JANE

JANE LATTIMER - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 29 JAN 1803
Gender: Female Christening: 30 JAN 1803 Wetwang With Fimber, Yorkshire, England
Father: MARK LATTIMER
Mother: MARY HUNTER

JANE IBBITSON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 03 FEB 1803
Gender: Female Christening: 27 FEB 1803 Crayke, Yorkshire, England
Father: MARK IBBITSON
Mother: ELLENOR WARD

JANE MARSHALL - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 21 FEB 1802 Aldbrough, , Yorkshire, England
Father: MARK MARSHALL
Mother: JANE LONGMAN

JANE CROSSLAND - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 25 FEB 1804
Gender: Female Christening: 13 APR 1804 High Street Chapel Methodist New Connexion, Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England
Father: MARK CROSSLAND
Mother: ELLEN

there is no Jackson, however if Jane married Samuel in 1833 then she would have been 30yrs old so maybe she had been married before and Jackson was not actually her maiden name but her married name, but nothing seems to fit with your ......ields either so ?

This would of course mean that Jane was actually not William's mother but I did find two birth records that could go with the marriage record that I found:-

1. ELIZABETH CLAYTON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 13 AUG 1834 Bradford, Yorkshire, England

2. WM. EDW CLAYTON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 02 NOV 1836 Bradford, Yorkshire, England

This is of course all theory and must to proven but maybe worth keeping on file.

Hi,

Thanks to the people who helped me find the marriage of Jane Clayton and Joseph Harding above. I now have the marriage certificate from 1839, but I have a new problem - I can't read the information I need, which is Jane's father's surname!

It reads:

16th June 1839

Joseph Harding of full age Bachelor Carter Scouthead John Harding Tailor

Jane Clayton of full age Widow [no occ.] ........wood Mark ....ields ......

I can't read Jane's residence at the time of marriage (but it ends in wood), her father's occupation, or his surname. It looks like it ends in 'ields', and the letters before it I first thought might be Edgf, but if it ends 'fields' then I don't think there can be a 'g' as well and I'm not convinced about the 'd' either.

I have tried a search of the 1841 census for a Mark in Saddleworth to see if I can match the name with one, and I have also searched later censuses for variations on Edgfields but have come up with absolutely nothing.

It's doing my head in - can anyone please help?

Thanks,
Emma.

* Edited to add that they married at Saddleworth parish church.

David, unfortunately I think this is unlikely. None of the Claytons in my tree have any records from the West Midlands.

Could be Jane's second marriage?

Emma

Emma Report 21 Aug 2008 23:16

Thank you! I think it must be the right marriage, as I thought they probably married pre-1841. Will be ordering said certificate, so I'll find out.

If it *is* the right marriage, though, it confuses me a little over Joseph's son Henry Nardin, who was 14 on the 1851 Census, which would give him a birth year of c. 1837. So perhaps he is not Jane's son? I suppose the certificate will tell me whether Joseph had been married before as well.

Catherine,

Jane was born c. 1804 in Saddleworth, Yorks.

There's nothing on the IGI that really fits the time period for a marriage, given that we have William's birth date as 1831. I'm assuming he was their only child, so possibly they had not been married long. I will see if I can find her second marriage on the BMD.

Did William have any brothers and sisters?

I have come to a dead end tracing my Clayton family line and wondered if anyone is able to help me or point me in the right direction.

I have a William Clayton (b. 1831 in Ashton or Saddleworth depending on the census). His parents were Samuel Clayton (birth date/place unknown - name taken from William's marriage certificate) and Jane.

Samuel Clayton died before the 1841 census, and Jane had remarried a Joseph Harden or Arden by 1851.

I would ideally like to find Jane's maiden name, and the places of birth and marriage for Samuel and Jane, to help me trace this line back further. Any ideas on where to start?
