Hi Jo

I'm just looking at his WW1 records on Ancestry, there are 4 images, it probably won't answer your original question but the images might have some info that you don't know already.

Next of kin is noted as father "John James Herbert".

Details for the marriage etc tally with thse you have posted above.

I tend to agree with Eric in that he may have been born just prior to the marriage in 1884 (based on his age at the time of marriage it suggests he was born abt 1883), the military records show him to have an "apparent age" of 31 yrs 180 days in March 1915 which would match well with the age at marriage.

I can't say who his father was for sure but i do know he was 5' 4" tall (according to the stats on the document anyway).

Hi all, sorry for delay replying, was in middles of doing it earlier but something came up.

Glen, the war records have heights on them? 5ft 4 same as me lol. So his dad is a John James Herbert not the name on the cert in first post here? Sorry you just said aswell you cant say who the Father is, maybe Eric is right then. One more question does the war records say what rank John was with?

Judith sorry who are John and Catherine? Is it John's parents? I know im useless lol.

Kay yes it looks like it is Cavalry Barracks Norwich.

Kay???? If there is a spelling error then its happened 3 times on the cert maybe as the 2 witnesses have surname Houghton also. Maybe John's mum is Gertrude Houghton as that is one of the witnesses name.

Kay???? Report 9 Aug 2008 21:48

Both Johns should be on the 1901 census,,,but by 1915 John James the father may not be in the same job,,,,,,,,but he looks to be your John herbert,as it confirmed his marriage to Gladys Ellen Smith,,,,,,

Jo ,if you have Ancestry you can print off the service records,,
