Jill

I would check deaths for that time too. It is possible she was there because of complications of birth?

Hi Dea, yes it could be her that would explain why she wasn't with Joseph - although she was born in Crawley, Oxfordshire not Crayley Kent it could have been misunderstood especially if she wasn't well.
Thanks for your help regards Jill

Thanks for that info Julie, I did look at the 1871 entry for Joseph but couldn't make out Married or Unmarried - assumed unmarried as living with parents so discounted him as having married in 1869 - if he was married where was Francis/Fanny his wife?

Sorry - my geography isn't so good - but I think it is near Willesden which is where Joseph was born - would that be right?

Julie

Julie Report 7 Aug 2008 21:08

Hendon isn't in East London

Right - my grandmother was Amelia Ann Read - she married John Wilder in Walthamstow in 1904 - her age was given as 28 making her birth 1876/77 -her father was Joseph occupation packer. At the time of her marriage she was living at Leucha Road, Walthamstow where in 1901 lived a William Read - brother???? 1881 census shows Amelia A daughter, William Son, Joseph father and Francis mother living in Tottenham. Birth cert I have for Amelia shows mother as Fanny Weaver and father Joseph Thomas occupation packer her dob 1877. 1891 census shows the family still in Tottenham without Amelia but with a younger sister Waverley(nickname) which I know is correct as she was my fathers aunt who he was sent to live with as a child.
There is a record of a marriage between Joseph Thomas Read and Fanny Weaver in 1869 at Hendon which is also in East London - what do you think? Does that sound right?

Thats true - but part of the fun - if all the records fitted it would be quite dull - I think all of us interested in our past have a bit of Miss Marples in us don't you?

Dea

Dea Report 7 Aug 2008 20:03

Nothing in this 'game' is ever certain, but in this case, if everything else matches, I would be happy!

Headache!!!! So - a birth cert in Francis a marriage cert in Fanny - census returns in Francis and birth cert of daughter as Fanny - as long as places and dates match it could be one and the same - but not a certainty - Thanks for the help Dea

Dea

Dea Report 7 Aug 2008 19:35

YES !!

Some people in years past found it necessary to revert to their 'christened' names, which they never used - just to confuse us !!

Other's, however, just kept to what they were called (nicknames etc).

There were no rules !

Thanks for the reply Dea, however would she use Fanny on her marriage certificate if she was Francis do you think?

Dea

Dea Report 7 Aug 2008 19:30

I have found on MANY occasions that Francis is known as Fanny!!

SO - VERY probable.

According to my Grandmothers birth certificate her mothers name was Fanny Weaver - however on the census she is shown as Francis - I have found a possible marriage between my Greatgrandfather Joseph Thomas Read and Fanny Weaver - is it possible that Francis and Fanny are the same person? Does anyone know if it was common to use nicknames or pet names on official documents or is it more likely that I'm looking are two different families?
