I am trying to trace my grandmother Mary Smith b Notts about 1888. Her family were Romany Gypsies so records are somewhat sketchy to say the least! Would be grateful for any info or help

Have you tried the 'Romany Genes' website - its gathering more and more information all the time and is a good source.

Hi To All Above.
I have deen trying for many years trying to trace ( Romany Smiths ) in the North/North West their has a few nice people trying to guide me with help, But all from the South West, all good help but it seems that the North and North West dont seem to either want to or no longer remember there Roots. I have been trying around Lancaster foe many years but to no avail.I think the yonger generation have forgotten there roots. But they are out there.
Try Typing (Romany Families and your chosen Areas ) you will get some possible Leads.
Good luck, Joe

Hi all,
I have managed to trace my romany family of smiths back to around 1832, this was mainly though the census files, through them you can work out births of people and where they were born, i did this and then contacted the registry office to obtain birth certificates etc., a cautionary note though, i have found out that before 1891 the family went by a completely different name, in the past romany people often took the most common name for various reason,
hope this is of help
Kim
