Find Ancestors

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could find my gggg uncle Charles Smitheringale in the census please?

He was born in c. 1844 in Maxey, Northamptonshire, the son of John and Elizabeth Smitheringale, although he appears with his father and step-mother Mary Ann in 1851. I assume he died just after this as I could find no futher trace of him, but I can find no death and I was wondering if any one can check to see him in the census or a relevent death?

Yes the are other Smitheringales in the same period and area but I beleive they all relate from one family in the mid 1700s.

Yes, Glitter Baby you found his father in 1861, with his STEP-MOTHER. His real mother, Elizabeth, died in 1848 in Maxey.

I can't find any of the children in the 1861:

There was a daughter Amelia born in 1832 - I can find nothing of her after this.

James, born 1835 - marride Sarah, and emmigrated to Canada. He was in a gaol in 1851.

George, married a lady named Rebecca, and seems to have stayed in Northamptionshire.

John, my ggg grandfather, married Emily/Amelia/Mildred Broughton - she seems to have changed her name frequently, and he moved and died in Middlesbrough.

Henry had a 'common-law' wife I beleive, before he married 'legitimately' in 1892 in Middlesbrough

Charles, as I said, I no nothing of.

Fanny, or Francis, married a man named Thomas Connelly in 1866 in Westminister, and she died in London, but I can't find her in any of the census.

As I said the children's mother died in March 1848, and John, their father remarried in August 1849 to Mary Ann Fitzjohn. John was killed in 1878 after been hit by a train at Acton Station - he lingered for three weeks, and died in the West London Hospital.

Mary Ann, his widow, died about 1907 I beleive.

PS thank you Gill, but I am not sure how the death you found fits into this family as yet, but he must be a close relation - perhaps a cousin? EDIT - yes I had caluclated incorrect, the death does fit for Charles Smitheringale!

The death I found is the right age for your man and ties in with the 1891 CR that Sue has found.

I wonder if - he was a boatman in 1891 and therefore may be missing from earlier censuses because of his occupation? Or, maybe, he did not get on with stepmother and reverted to using his mother's maiden name? (I've noticed that before ...)

You should consider doing a One Name Study on this name - there do not seem to be millions of them and I noticed various spelling variations on Ancestry. Could be an interesting project!

Yes, I will order the death certificate and see what it will yeild.

I have considered a one name study and it would be something I would love to do, but I am going into my final of a degree at University and so the summer months, and my lack of access to ancestrylibrary make this difficult but this is something I am very intersted in.

John, who was killed in London after been hit by a train, had three siblings I beleive (from the top of my head), and he was the son of Henry (1787-1826) and Rebecca (1790-1874).

Henry seems to have been one of a small family, and his parents were James and Elizabeth (I can find no marriage). There was a James died in 1828 aged 88, so born c. 1740, but this the furthest I have gotten back.

I have looked into the name but there are no specified origins - I have not found one database that produces a origin for the name. I have thought the Smitheringales may have emmigrated to England from somewhere abroad in the mid 1700s but I have found some English records from the 1600s that could be varients such as Smithergill ...

Very interesting but a real mystery.

By the way, the children's mother was Elizabeth, nee Vickers. Can you find anything on this?

Yes this is the marriage of John (1814-1878) and Mary Ann Fitzjohn (1830-1907)

Sorry, John married Elizabeth Vickers in 1832, this was his first wife and mother of the children in the 1851 census.

The marriage I could not find was for James and Elizabeth Smitheringale which I suspect would of taken place in the 1770s/1780s, but this is pure speculation. James and Elizabeth Smitherinale were the parents of Henry Smitheringale (1787-1826) who married Rebecca Pretty, who were the parents of John (1814-1878) who married Elizabeth Vickers in 1832 and Mary Ann Fitzjohn in 1849.

I beleive James Smitheringale is the one who died in 1828 aged 88, but I have no proof of this, and this was speculated due to the uncommoness of the name, and the area and date itself.

Thank you - this is the family in 1841. 'Mahala' is Amelia, but she disapears after 1841 ... I wonder how they just vanish!
