They are actually all boarders at the house of William Hamer, a beerseller, and his wife Ann.

Andrea, I think the one you just found is from Preston and , as there is an 1891 census for her as opposed to the one you have above for your Mary J., they are two different people.
However, what about this 1901 census for her, brother John and father, James.

There's another Lackinson Cook on the 81 census. Must be related, surely, with such an unusual name? He was born 1845, Blackburn.

The "less is more" approach when you search for hits in the census often works best.

If you can't find a particular ancestor by filling in all the boxes try leaving one or two blank, also consider mistranscriptions as illustrated above.

For example enter just the surname and Lancashire as county of residence, see how many results you get, you might well find other family just by looking for the surname in the county.

The only sure way to find parents is to order the birth cert.

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 30 Jul 2008 21:20

The original looks like Lackinson. The L is exactly like the one in Lancashire, unless the county is Tancashire!

Andrew

Andrew Report 30 Jul 2008 21:20

Hi Andrea

As you say, the transcriber misread the census record. Ancestry is sadly riddled with errors and if a you can't find a name, chances are its mistranscribed. This must be the cause of the majority of lookup requests made.
