You can use http://freebmd.rootsweb.com up to about 1925. From late 1911 the mother's surname is included in the registration. So you search the surname looking for the mother's surname to pair them up.

After 1925 you will need the complete registration index and have to search quarter by quarter, year by year. Complete registrations on Ancestry or Find My Past.

If you go to the site and do a search for births of Surname Slater, Mothers Surname Martin after 1910 in Chelmsford. You should see another name registered on the same page. Was your John a twin?

Its the only one on free bdm after the marrige so you will have to search like pam said year by year for any other children, have you searched the trees on GR
