Hi Barbara,
Do you have any idea where he was born. I have Smith in my family tree, but they were from Scottish/Irish Stock. It is not easy tracing Smith as there are so many.

In Scotland the death certificates (same as marriage certs) give details of their parents, their spouse, their address, occupation, age, and details of any witnesses. That is how I found my Nans' Grgrandfathers' details. His name was Muir Smith. What I am having trouble with is her own siblings, and that of her mother Janet Mays Smith.
Just some suggestions, hope this is helpful. Census records of the known area also help. But you probably already know this.
