To KathrynB (in Canada)
Thank you for your info... This is what I DO know. My mother Emily Sarah Smith died 20 Aug, 1968 in Luton, Bedfordshire, England (age 60). My Father, George Frederick Smith died 27 Jan, 1981 (age 73) in Luton, Bedfordshire, England. His birthdate is listed as 14 Sep, 1907.
My Grandmother, Elizabeth Ann Smith died 27 July 1942 (age 71)

Do you know how old Elizabeth Ann was when she died in 1942? Or maybe the date of her death, so it could be found in the GRO index?

It might be possible to cross-check that info with the Elizabeth Ann Kelly who married a George Frederick Smith in 1901, for example. If it matched, you'd have a working hypothesis for your grandmother's name / your grandparents' marriage.

When did your dad die, Brian?

Any chance this is his death?

Name: George Frederick Smith
Birth Date: 8 Jun 1907
Death Registration Month/Year: Nov 1985
Age at death (estimated): 78
Registration district: Fulham
Inferred County: London
Volume: 12
Page: 789

In the searchable post-1984 death index there is no George Smith born 14 Sept 1907. (Of course your dad may have died before that time.)

Could this be his birth

Births Dec 1907

SMITH George Frederick Holborn 1b 611

As his birthday was in the middle of September he could have been registered in October (4th Quarter).

There are no births registered in the right area in the 3rd Quarter

Yes! George Frederick Smith (1907) was my father. Unfortunately I don't have any records at all! I'm relying on memory a lot... The only information I do have written down is that he was born 14/9/1907, and there is a question to that since he celebrated his birthday in June.

Have you tried looking for their marriage at FreeBMD?

http://www.freebmd.org.uk

Click the red "Search" -- I searched for

marriages
surname smith
given names george frederick
spouse's given names elizabeth ann
1890-1908

The only one that is a possible match is:

Marriages Dec 1901
Davis Caroline Lousia Pancras 1b 55
>> KELLY Elizabeth Ann Pancras 1b 55
>> Smith George Frederick Pancras 1b 55
Smith William Gaythorne Pancras 1b 55

Is George Frederick Smith 1907 your father? No chance you have his birth cert I suppose. Date of birth? His birth cert is what you need to get his mother's name, so you could then find his parents' marriage for sure. The marriage cert will give you George Sr's approx age and father's name, barring unusual circumstances.

My grandfather was George Smith (possibly middle name of Frederick since it was a family tradition to name the firstborn boy by that name). They lived in the Clerkenwell, Islington area of London. I'm sure that he and his wife Elizabeth Ann , who died in 1942, had six children named Alice, Ned, Ted, George, Ernie and Kate. There were step-children involved so I'm not sure in what relationship, I just know that Alice Ned and Ted were blood related, and George, Ernie and Kate were too!
Their son, George Frederick Smith (b. 1907) married Emily Sarah Rayment (b.1908) December 25, 1930.
I hope someone out there has information on them!
