Update to previous posting.

Have checked out Albert and George (the "piano men"!) on previous censuses.

Neither appear on the 1851 or 1861. George is recorded as a lodger working as a "cabinet maker" on the 1871, but no sign of Albert.

All the above (occupations plus absence in censuses, plus George and Albert's birth years/places) convince me that they are also sons of John (b. 1800) and Mary Ann.

I can now follow through on two male lines of this family (Albert and George), but would dearly love to know what became of their brother John (whether he married and had a family).

Hi Christine and Selena ...

Thanks for joining in! Yes, the John snr. that I'm trying to find is the brother of James, Sarah and Joseph, and son of Richard WASTIE and Catherine WISEMAN.

Richard and his son James were both trading as butchers in the Walworth/Bermondsey areas, and I have a direct WASTIE ancestor who turns up in London (from Oxford - see below) around 1800 and also works as a butcher in the same parishes - feel sure they must be related!

My maternal grandmother was a WASTIE, born in Handborough (Oxon.). I have traced her paternal line back to the mid 1600s (so far!) and all members of this extended family live around Eynsham (Oxon.). However, from the mid 1700s the surname starts appearing in London and I feel sure that one or two branches of the family moved to the capital, but so far have been unable to prove this definitely (am working with and for several other researchers of this family around the world).

I'm trying to put together some sort of rough tree of London WASTIEs to see whether they all go back to one or two ancestors who may have come from Oxfordshire.

Further to my previous posting, the following two WASTIEs appear on the 1881 census:

Albert WASTIE, born c1845 in St. Pancras, Middx. - "Pianoforte Finisher"
George WASTIE, born c1842 in St. Pancras, Middx. - "Pianoforte Maker"

Again, feel sure these two are connected (brothers and possible sons of John?) - now off to try and prove it!

A little bit off topic, but John 1800 has three siblings on familysearch.org that are James, Sarah and Joseph. Parents Richard and Catherine.

If ever proof were needed that one should never throw away miscellaneous research paperwork ... this is it!

Going through my WASTIE file (subsection: London!), I found correspondence with a fellow WASTIE researcher in Australia. She has found two WASTIEs on the 1881 census - one was a pianoforte finisher, and the other a pianoforte maker (unfortunately, neither named John)!

Will do some further research on these two to see if they "fit" anywhere.

Hi Vera ...

You're working so hard for me - many thanks!

Yes, that looks like John jnr. on the 1901 - and the occupation is possibly ringing a few bells ...

I just can't understand why it's proving impossible to find the two Johns (father and son) on the 1851/61/71 censuses. I would really like to find the family of son John so that I can add him to my WASTIE database - off to check that pianoforte maker clue!

Hi Vera ...

I think I agree with you! Looking at the census image, it doesn't look as if it's a mistranscribed WASTIE.

Thanks to all three of you for your replies - that clears up two of the daughters, but I wonder where the parents, son John and youngest daughter Elizabeth were in subsequent censuses (at only 4 in 1841, I would think it's a fair bet that she was still with her parents 10 years later).

WASTIE is a very uncommon name. Father John's death is recorded on FreeBMD in 1878 (aged 78, so born c1800 - so he must be around somewhere!).

It would also be useful to know what happened to John jnr. as I am trying to construct an extended tree of this family in London (it's almost certain that they are all related). (FreeBMD has the death of another John WASTIE in 1903 aged 76 - this fits with John jnr.'s year of birth - he must also be around somewhere!).

Anyone interested in carrying on the search???

Penny

I have the following family on the 1841 census, but am having extreme difficulty finding them on any subsequent ones!

Living in Marylebone, Middx.
John WASTIE - 40 - Cabinet Maker - Y
Mary WASTIE - 40 - N
John WASTIE - 14 - Y
Rose WASTIE - 12 - Y
Emma WASTIE - 6 - N
Elizabeth WASTIE - 4 - N

I know that Emma was born in Walworth, Surrey (she had an elder sister - also called Emma - who was born in Marylebone in 1832, but I'm assuming that this elder Emma died in infancy).

I also know that father John lived until 1878, and mother Mary until the early 1900s.

Can anyone find the family (together or separately) on the next couple of censuses?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Penny

PS Have to go and do some "chores" now, but will check back mid afternoon.
