Thanks Ann. I am going to try and trace family of John and Mary Nicholls, as she was present at my Robert Stricklands death. I hope she would therefore have known about my grandmother.

I would think you are right with elizabeth maiden name - it is the only Robert / Elizabeth marriage in Lancs for the correct time span

Have found out that Ellen died in 1922. Her parents Robert and Elizabeth of 2 Ward Street died in 1928, within 3 months of each other. This would explain orphanage before adoption. My lead now is Ellens sister, Mary. Mary was a Mary Nicholls of 25a Wildman Street in October 1928.
I think Elizabeths maiden name was Lonsdale

I asked in the Lancs CRO yesterday and they have no info on Blackpool Orphanage.

Elizabeth was adopted in 1930 and became MARY ELIZABETH DOWLER

I can only assume Ellen is the 3yr old in 1901 census living at 33 Wildman Street?

will have a look what I can find when I go home (I am on holiday at the moment) - all my old toys used to go to the Blackpool orphange when I was a child

She was not adopted until 1930, from Blackpool Orphanage. I too assume she was illegitimate as there is no name of father on birth certificate. She also lived with her Grandmother for a time previous to orphanage, which I might add is a nightmare to find anything about! Any info on Blackpool orphanage, Talbot Road in 1920's also greatly received.... Have a letter from Matron, Miss E. Swallow....

when was she adopted? I assume she was illegitimate as mothers maiden name is Strickland.
Was Ellen born in Blackpool do you know as I think it was a popular place for people to come to hide although Strickland is a common name for the area.

More interested in Ellen and her family, as would like to find out under what circumstances Mary was adopted. Also, any info surrounding her adoption in general would be greatly appreciated.
