Lots of the midlands carriers and their boats appear on the hnboc site, worth googling the names of a few canal carriers too if they are relevant.

What are the names of boats, I have some boat names taken from Health Inspection records I to am researching canal families. Also have some Surnames of boatpeople.

hi all thank you for your replys...
the surnames are wild/e and chomondley(various spellings)they were on the barges in wolves and shropshire bunbury locks nantwich ect. the boat names i have are congo/cargo in 1894 and surco dora in 1896, thanks for your help

The only information I have is as follows from 1881 Census
William Cholmondley, Head, Married, Age 42y
b: Wolverhampton Occupation: Master

Eliza Cholmondley, Wife, Age: 39 b: Bonehill, Warwick Occupation: Masters Wife

Thomas Cholmondley, Other, Age 30 b: Wolverhampton Occupation: Assistant

Location: "Philip" Boat Yard Chester
Census Place: St Oswalds, Chester
FHLF: 1341852
Public Records: RG11
Folio: 3560/35 Page: 63

On the night of the census the above boat was moored next to "Bombay" which was worked by the Moore Family who are decendants of my husband.

Have you had a look at Norman Holts list of Surnames
as both the ones you are looking for appear on the list

Hanley, Ellsmere Port and Chester Records Office have boat registers and other information.
Try Laura York at Braunston, very helpful lady

Braunston has the canal museum, also worth contacting are British Waterways, they have a large collection of archive material from the early days of the canals (not just the post nationalisation of the waterways).

The museum by the way is at Stoke Bruerne, not Braunston.
Braunston is till very much a working canal area with boat builders, dry docks, wet docks, fender makers.
You have just missed the Historic Boat Rally, they have one every year and well worth a visit and there are some very knowledgeable people attend.

David Suchet the actor opened it this year.

I know some canal people, when I visit again (we have a boat there) I'll run the names past them.

The Wray and Sladen families were very well known 'water people' in Yorks and Notts; I have them both in my tree and am happy to share info.
