Im thinking of subscribing to Ancestry (when i get paid - its easy to get hooked on this stuff and credits with this site dont go very far). I found four more relatives last night after you put me onto Ancestry! (From a different part of the family)

I will check out this tree.

I also want to see if I can find my fathers ancestors on his father's side. This is proving difficult as there is no father's name on the birth cert!! I hope to find his grandmother on the 1881 census.

Thanks for all your help Liz, I really do appreciate it.

There is a tree on ancestry with this family on. George married Ann Edwards (wonder if she was anything to do with the family Emma's with?) in 1841. Do you have ancestry so you could get in touch? The owner updated his tree just last week.

Oh bless you, I feel really lazy now! I hope you are not spending credits on this for me?

I was thinking - if Emma was in service to those ladies, that would explain why she wasnt on the 61 census with her family. It all fits together like a jigsaw.

I guess Jane would be the mother in law of Sarah Edwards. I wonder where the husband is?

alviegal Report 5 Jul 2008 21:13

Penhow is where both her and her husband, Valentine, are born according to the 1871. I'm finding all this on ancestry.

awww bless her - even it its not my Emma, thats wicked, 11 and in service. Poor little girl.

Kids today dont know they are born!!

Again, Penhow is very close to Caerwent and Langstone (and near where I live now too!)

Julie

Julie Report 5 Jul 2008 21:06

ah, so that makes her year of birth 1850 +/-1

Do you have the census discs Liz or are you searching somewhere for all this?

alviegal

alviegal Report 5 Jul 2008 21:02

Emma is actually 21 on the 1871 census, not 31!

I wonder if this is the poor girl here in 1861.

The household is actually Sarah Edwards (36) a carpenter's wife, John, her 14 year old son and Jane Edwards, her 77 year old, widowed mother? Emma is a 'maid of all work.'

Brilliant - that makes sense. Cant see the miner being a connection then if he is an ag lab.

Emma just may have been at a different house on the night of the census. I take it that Charles does not appear on the 1851 census?

alviegal

alviegal Report 5 Jul 2008 20:56

Ernest Sheppard is a nephew.Charles is an ag lab and Emma is his sister in the 1851 census. Don't know where she is in 1861.

Sorry Liz, dont understand the connection now with Emma.

The surnames Beams and Bearns are very similar, especially if handwritten....

How did you find the above entry?

Caerwent is not far from Langstone though....

Julie

Julie Report 5 Jul 2008 20:52

I saw this entry somewhere too, LDS website I think. Im not sure. He may well have been a miner and lodged in Monmouth, I will have to ask my grandmother if she knows.

Do you know what his occupation is on the 1891 census ? I notice the earlier post on this thread didnt give that.

Im still trying to get my head around the brother/sister in law bit! There is no Emma amongst Charles siblings on the 61 census. Could she have been a Sheppard? (his wife's maiden name) Notice the Ernest Sheppard on the 91 census.

In 1871 I think Emma must be a sister as the Beams are sister and brother in laws to Valentine.

Yes, this has to be the one - langstone is very close to Newport and I know that Jessie, Charle's daughter was born at Langstone in 1890.

Im trying to make sense of the Stidders, with the Beam's children.

Are you able to view the census entry? Are there any other Beams nearby? I know that in some cases, large families let some of their children live with neighbours instead.

This is intersting stuff - if you can access anything else, I would be most grateful. Thank you very much

Charles married Sarah Shepherd in Newport Q2/1886

They had five children, Alice, George, Emma, Fred and Jessie (who was my great grandmother).

Jessie was adopted as a baby by her aunt and Uncle - James Evans and his wife. They had no children of their own and Jessie was, apparently, a 'delicate' child.

Any info greatly appreciated
