So often we find that Philadelphias come from Sussex.
.... I wonder why?

Hi Everyone,

More on Philadelphia....

Yes, I did save some stuff to my shoe box...but I don't think that the Lewes Philadelphia is mine..I found a Philadelphia Thorpe who was married to Richard Thorpe...that gels with the rest of my line...but I don't know if she is the P.Potter that I am looking for....Yes, Gwyn there are a lot of Philadelphia's from Sussex, funny as it isn't really a common name.....or was it for that era?

Wendy, if you *could* give some info -- ?

I looked at this the other night and was waiting for it, too.

You think Philadelphia Potter married John Thorpe. Why?

If they did, when would it have been?

We don't even know what century we're talking about, let alone decade!

Is Sussex actually the right area?

Do you know of children -- is that why you have the names, e.g.?

Etc.!

(A note, Wendy -- you said "Yes, I did save some stuff to my shoe box" -- when you saw the shoebox stuff in Lindsey's post, it was just part of what she copied from her own search results -- I don't know about this shoebox stuff, but I think it means she saved it to hers so she could easily find it again if you need it in this thread.)

Hi everyone..apologies to all for the confusion and mucking about..

If anyone is still in a mood to lend a helping hand, I have managed to find the small amount of information that I neglected to put in my original request..I found Philadelphia and Richard Thorpe in the 1841 census at Brighton( or Brighthemstone) with their sons, one of which is Thomas bn 1829. Thomas married Ellen Dier ( Dyer) in 1849,again in Brighton. Harriet Thorpe was their daughter.(bn 1850)

I have not been able to find out any more on Philadelphia, who I worked out would have been born in 1806 ish...but where ?? I did also find a Philadelphia Potter who resided in Hastings, in what appears to be some sort of poor house..but I don't think that she is the same lady that I am looking for...I am unable to find Richard's birth as well.

I'm afraid that is all the information that I have managed to trace...

Harriet Thorpe was my Great Grandmother, married to John Edwards, their son was Richard, my fathers father...

Funny thing -- every time my Firefox crashed in the last two weeks, when I restored the session, it gave me this thread. And I'd just leave that tab sitting there til next time I crashed. And then a couple of hours ago I closed it. ;)

And Thomas Thorpe's birth, also for ref:
(oops, I deleted it somehow before posting; editing to add back)

THOMAS THORPE
Birth: 03 SEP 1829
Christening: 10 MAY 1835
North Street-Countess Of Huntingdons Or Dissentingbrightonants, Brighton, Sussex, England
Parents:
Father: RICHARD THORPE
Mother: PHILADELPHIA POTTER

Messages:
Batch No.: C075991

No other births to that couple.

Did you mean to say a Philadelphia Thorpe (not Potter) in Hastings? Yours would have been Thorpe, if it were in a census. This would be the death of that person one might think --

Deaths Jun 1856
Thorpe Philadelphia Hastings 2b 11

This one in 1851?

Name: Philadelphia Thorpe
Age: 65
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1786
Relation: Lodger
Gender: Female
Where born: Hastings, Sussex, England

Civil Parish: Hastings St Mary in The Castle
Town: Hastings
County/Island: Sussex
Country: England

This is a bit of a coincidental birth, though -- the only other one in the IGI for father Richard Thorpe and mother Philadelphia:

RICHARD WILLIAM THORPE
Birth: 17 MAR 1827
Christening: 15 APR 1827 Saint Luke, Chelsea, London, England
Parents:
Father: RICHARD THORPE
Mother: PHILADELPHIA
Batch No.: C067054

Might they have been there at the time? Richard was not born in Sussex, remember, per the 1841.

Possibly interesting Richard Thorpe with father Thomas:

RICHARD THORPE
Christening: 10 AUG 1806 Saint John, Hackney, London, England
Father: THOMAS THORPE
Batch No.: C042152

... or have you placed your Richard Thorpe?

I know it's Philadelphia you're looking for, but placing her husband in time/space could help.

Wendy Report 15 Jul 2008 05:42

Yes Kathryn, you are correct, I did mean Philadelphia Thorpe...I'm really good at confusing myself !!

There seems to be a couple of Philadelphia Thorpes around at the same time, doesn't there !!
I'm not sure who Richards father is, I haven't managed to get that far...I find that the years that I am searching, everyone seems to have the same names !!! I manage to confuse myself with who, what and where !!

The Philadelphia Thorpe from Hastings could be a widow, who could be my Philadelphia...it's very hard isn't it !!

Wendy

Wendy Report 15 Jul 2008 05:45

I think that I have stuffed up again...Richard and Philadelphia are the 'parents' of Thomas ...I would like to find 'their' parents...sorry...
