Hello Tracey,

I am the webmaster of the mentioned site. I will try to explain the confusing 1861 census entry for you;

Rebecca Flinn was born a Town(s)end, the illegitimate daughter of Nina Townend. Nina married a John Lawton in the same year so he may be the father. Nina had a previous illegitimate son called John Kilner Townend (1793).

Rebecca had an illegitimate daughter Amelia before she married a Michael Flinn 10 years after.

Amelia had 2 illegitimate daughters Ellen Taylor Townend (1841) and Ruth Townend (1843) before she met Richard Booth. Another daughter, Elizabeth was born in 1853 before they were married in 1855.

Ellen Taylor Townend had an illegitimate son, Walter before marrying James Moorhouse about 7 years later.

I hope you find this interesting!

All the best

Russell

Reggie,

Just as a second thought, maybe Walter was his but he just took a while doing the right thing for what ever reason, still its nice to think there was some good sorts back then.

Formal adoption didn't come in until the 1920's.

He would have just 'taken him on'..........

At least he seems to have accepted the boy.......by calling him his 'son'.....and not stepson; or 'wife's son'

Thats a bit of a turn up for the books!! Does that mean James would of formerly adopted him or would he would just been a Moorhouse after the marriage?

Tracey

Tracey Report 22 Jun 2008 16:16

Reggie,

I guess there is a possiblity it could be a second wife, as while researching the data kept throwing up Mary as his spouse, but I put this down to the fact there are 2 james's from Skelmanthorpe one 1832 and one 1833, one from mirfield and one from wakefield reg districts.

Thankyou for that

Julie,

It looks likely it could be her as the date certainly fits the 1876-1881 range, and huddersfield was the reg district for skelmanthorpe,

Thankyou

Can someone help find details (birth marriage and death) regarding
the spouse of James Moorhouse born 1832 Skelmanthorpe, he married Ellen born 1841 Skelmanthorpe, they had the following children Walter 1859, Clara 1864, Willie 1871 and Emma 1876, all
born in Skelmanthorpe, in the 1881 census James was classed as a widow, so I presume Ellen died between 1876 and 1881.
The only record I have been able to find with her in it was the 1871
census.
many thanks for your time Tracey
