My dad was adopted in 1943 so far we know his mothers maiden name and we have his birth certificate with his registered surname.

We were given information on her last known address however I have hit a brick wall because the Lane, it would seem, has never existed. I checked this with the Birmingham archives dating back to 1837. We know he was in Mossley Hill Hostel Liverpool and adopted in Wales.

All I have is her name. How do I go from there to trying to obtain her date of birth and then where she may or may not live, may or may not have gotten married and may or may not have had more children? Is she even alive?!

The surname and her first name are so common it'll be a miracle if I found it given the fact I have no date of birth.

If there is anybody who can give me the next logical step to take I would be very appreciative.

Thank you very much for taking the time to read this. I have just received my dad's adoption certificate and she is not mentioned on it. Only the adoptive parents are mentioned.

Can you check the electoral rolls for around that time? Not sure if they were recorded in the war.

Is there a similar address to the Lane? can you give us the address at all? Someone might have a bright idea or know the area and what it might have been called.

Hello

Thank you. The Lane is Haycocks Lane in Birmingham. I had a nice gentleman from the Archives at Birmingham Library respond and I he can see no record I have pasted his response below

"I see what you mean about trying to search for this street, I have
inspected the current edition of the Birmingham & West Midlands A - Z, plus
the 1926 edition and cannot trace any reference to Haycocks Lane. I have
also inspected the street indexes to the Birmingham census for 1841 - 1901
and there is no reference to the address. I have also viewed Sargeant's
Street Directory of Birmingham which is usually very useful in assisting to
identify the origins of streets, but this unfortunately could not provide
any help on this occasion.

I did a quick Google search and it did provide reference to Corporation
Street and Newton Street, but this really does not make any sense as there
is no street in the vicinity bearing the name Haycocks Lane."

Thank you all very much you're very kind. I feel quite emotional :-)

So he was born in Birmingham, moved to a hostel in Liverpool and then adopted in Wales?

Hello Portland Rose

That's where we come unstuck. It is now our belief, that he may have been placed in Salvation army hostel from birth but, at the moment we don't know for sure. Unfortunately there are a few pieces of the jigsaw missing. When you think that until today he believed he was adopted in Liverpool.

Today we discovered that he was adopted through a juvenile court in wales. Does that mean it was a battle or are all adoptions done through these means? See the more I discover the more questions I have.

Thank you David I look forward to hearing your answer. :-)

Hi David

Wow there are a lot variations on the name. I expect you are right in that case. Her surname is Davies we know that around 1942/1943 she apparently worked in a Munitions factory in Birmingham.

Thank you so much for this.

David

Just a thought how is it listed in the electoral role is it name and address including house number. I have given you her name but albeit that the road is wrong maybe the number 314 associated with her might narrow it down. That is of course if any of the information we have is true. :-)

Hi,
Just reading your thread it sounds much like myself.I was born in Surrey in 1946 and adopted in Wales through a court.i think that was the norm.Best of luck with your search.

THe plot thickens and I tend to agree with your statement there was a theory that she might be young hence the adoption but it's only ever been speculation. I have checked a few records and I am of the opinion that I will have to get my dad to go back to the people who gave him the information and press them for more.

David you have been a star and thank you very much . I think I will leave it here and tell him to go back to the drawing board.

Thanks again. Bromwich is interesting. In one of my many "stab in the dark and guess her age" I found a registration district of West Bromwich but again given the amount of Davies it was probably fluke rather than fact.

I am very grateful to you. :-)

Thank you Elouise.

I find it amazing how many are families are out there searching for a name or an answer.

Contact is not something we are trying to establish we just hope to get as many answers as we possibly can.
Thank you I will look up Bernice. :-)

Hi

You have a copy of his adoptive certificate, but do you have a copy of his original birth certificate ?

The information you have where is it from ? I am wondering if he was adopted into Wales as this was during the war years, and Liverpool was bombed quite a lot during this time, however, , myself and my 3 sisters where born in Liverpool in the 60's and adopted out up to 30 miles away.

Could she have been working in the munitions areas of Liverpool ? this would make more sense.

You really need a copy of this original birth cert to proceed further.

Hi Sheila

The information I have is 2nd hand through my dad but I have ordered his full original birth certificate again so that I can satisfy myself that it is what he says.

I didn't know that about liverpool and the connection that is very interesting.

Did you all get adopted together?

Nicola

No we where separated, but managed to trace everyone about 4 years ago :O)
Has he ever asked to view his adoption file ? and did his parents give him the info ?

SearcherMcD Report 18 Jun 2008 23:51

No his parents never gave him information. His adoption came out in an argument with his dad when he was 21. His adopted sister was adopted within the family. My aunty met her mother before she died but no living relative (his generation and older are now dead) ever volunteered any information.

Im glad you found eachother that must have been a great day/s :-)

I had a message from a lady earlier who said the same as you and I have sent it to my dad. Thank you for your information. Can I just ask did it take a long time to find eachother?

I love a happy ending.

:-)
