Find Ancestors

Hello, Can anyone give me any tips on things I can try to find a birth record?

I am looking for Emily Leggett born about 1867 in Stevenage, Herts.

I have found her on the census' for 1871, 1881, 1891 & 1901. The age stays fairly constant and the place of birth always given as Stevenage but I cannot find a birth record?

Her father's name was George Leggett and her mother is Mary Ann Leggett. She married William Neve in 1892 in Gt Yarmouth.

I have tried Ancestry and Free BMD and tried just putting Leg* but no uck, anything else I can try?

She probably wasn't registered. It was compulsory to register until 1875.

Really? I didn't know that. How annoying, I was hoping to find her mothers maiden name there!

If she was aged 4 on the 1871 census, she would have been born 1866-67.

Extend your search say 1866-1868, in Hitchin (which is the reg. district for Stevenage) and tick the phonetic search surnames box...there are lots of misspellings.

This could be her parents marriage, maybe you could find another childs birth to confirm it?

She had 11 siblings! so maybe I'll strike lucky with some of the later ones, then I can check out that marriage.

That all fits. Violetta and Martha are definitely 2 of her sisters. I didn't know about an Anna but I suppose she may have died before the census?

Going to bed now but I'll check out the IGI for the rest of the brood tomorrow.

(That's another place I didn't think to look! you lot are so much better at this than me!)

Thank you for that Margaret. They all tie in with her siblings names from the census'. Blimey - so much information now - not sure where to start! (not complaining!)

Can I ask what the BVRI is? I haven't come across that?

BVRI is British Vital Records Index.
It's a set of 16 cd's that you can purchase from LDS Church through the Familysearch website. They're extracted from parish records so quite reliable.

Hi - just an update and to thank you for all your help.
I have received the birth certificate which I ordered based on the suggestions received here and it looks to be the right one!

Emily was born 5 October 1866 in Stevenage - Father George and Mother Mary Ann (formerly Young so it looks like the marriage Carrie suggested is right as well!)
