Adoption before 1900? Lost relative on the 1901 ce

I also have Constable in my tree and we came across a problem. My Constable had a son and the surname was after the mothers name, I gather they couldn't have been married as I could not find the marriage certificate. So we have all passed down the mothers surname through four generations! My father has now double barreled his surname by deed poll.
My Gt Grandma disappeared in the 1901 cesus for a while, it seems the family were all living with different relations, not sure why? But the spelling was different thats why I had problems finding her, as she is a Lily, also spelt lilian or Lillie I have found. So I would double check for different spellings of the name?

Jenna - annoying isn't it!? hehe! I love puzzles, but this might be a bit beyond me!

Samantha - You don't have any idea about her surname do you? Or any other info about her?

Hmm...this is a tricky one. we have to get to the bottom of it somehow

Well, as my Nan remembered her I know that she must have survived into her early thirties at least (my nan was born in 1923).

To be honest it may just be impossible to trace her. I have so little information to go on.

:)

Is it possible that lillian died too?

Saffron

Saffron Report 18 May 2008 20:45

Ah, because I have seen Rose Lillian somewhere, but can't remember where.

Gladys could well be a relation. I'll have to get hold of her certificate to be sure, but it's a possibility. I'm waiting for Roses death certificate to see if it sheds any light, I doubt it will help but it would be interesting to know what she died of, she wasn't that old.

Jenna,

I'll have a look into that. ( I have no idea if they had other children either!) Thanks for that

I do have their marriage, yes, but thank you:)

I did wonder about Rose Lillian too...where did you get that from?

JenW

I wonder if this is any relation?

Frederick and Rose's marriage is the first one registered in south shields and the next one is in 1893?

It's possible this Gladys died in Stourbridge 6 months after she was born

i was wondering the same thing. maybe she was called rose lilian?

I dont know if you knew that the parents married in south shields in 1890?

Saffron

Saffron Report 18 May 2008 20:35

Hi Jenna,

Me neither!!!! I *know* she existed! My nan remembered her. I just wonder if she was called something else and just known as Lillian. Or even possibly that if she was adopted her 'parents' renamed her Lillian and it wasn't her birth name (my nan knew her when she was older - so she was obviously still in touch with her brother, my nan's father).

Thanks anyway!

sorry would love to help but i cant even find a birth for her

Saffron

Saffron Report 18 May 2008 20:32

Hi Heather.

Thanks for the reply. I had a feeling that that might be the case. I have a feeling she might be lost to time! The info I have is just based on what my nan remembered (sadly she is no longer around for me to check with).

I did have a look through deaths, but didn't come up with anything.

Im afraid official adoptions didnt start til 1927 - prior to then kids were placed with relatives or friends etc. You could try trawling 1901 for a Lillian with the right year of birth and place of birth but Im not sure how successful you may be. I take it you have checked for deaths?

I hope someone can help, as I'm stumped!! I am trying to find info on a Lillian Constable. I believe she was born around 1895 to parents Frederick Hamilton Constable and Rose Lloyd (who were an actor and actress). I have no definite details on her birth place, although I know that her brother Frederick Brittain Constable was born in Salford, Manchester. Her mother Rose died in 1899 and her father subsequently remarried (or at least cohabited!). However, on the 1901 census Lillian is not with her father (nor anywhere else it would seem!). Her brother is on the 1901 census still under the Constable name but listed as an 'adopted son' with another couple. I am wondering if it is possible that Lillian was also adopted, but I have no idea how I would go about finding out. Does anyone have any ideas? Or can anyone see her on the 1901 census that I am just missing? Any help or ideas would be grately appreciated.

Many thanks.

Saffron:)
