Not sure how to go about doing this. Who do I contact?

I'd apply to get your adoption papers.

Hi Gwyn, yes, my mum married when I was 3 and I was adopted by them both (you couldnt just be adopted by one). However, i'm led to believe that because there was no contact with my biological father and his name doesn't appear on my birth certificate, his permission wasn't required, therefore, he does not appear on the adoption papers - although I have never seen them! Did your mother's husband adopt you?
If so, there may be an address on the adoption papers.
Unfortunately it is not going to be an easy search with a fairly common name but an electoral roll search of any address for him might give a few more clues.

Hi, thanks for your reply. Not that i'm aware of. I hate to say it but its difficult to know whether she has given me all the info she knows or if she's keeping some back. Its still quite difficult to discuss it with her as my adoptive Dad is wonderful and I think she feels a certain sense of loyalty to him, as do I.

By any chance did your mum have a copy of the letter?

I am trying to find my father, Robert (Bob) Johnson. I believe he was born in 1940's and lived in London with his mother. He visited Brighton 41 years ago and I was the result! About a year after my birth he and his mother made my Mum sign a solicitors letter stating that she would never give his details to me. Over the years I have become more curious and, finally, my Mum told me everything that she knew which, unfortunately, wasn't much. His name does not appear on my birth certificate so that route isn't an option. Can anyone help me looking for this needle in a haystack?
