Do you have his marriage cert to his second wife Matilda? It should say whether she was single or a widow previously.

If Joshua was married before, and had children from that marraige, one of the children's birth cert would give her name including her maiden name

Hi,
Please can you help me?
My husband's grandfather was called Joshua Whalley born circa (1875) he was from Newcastle Staffs. He married twice: I don't know the name of his 1st wife but his second was Matilda Toft, she also had children from her 1st marriage. The only Matilda Toft I can find isn't her so Toft must have been her married name. I don't know where to start! Joshua did live at 16, Lawson Terrace, Newcastle in 1909 according to my husbands Dad's birth certificate.
