You must know where he was born if you have him on the census. |

Yes, thank you. He was born in Hursley Hampshire. His wife was Jane (age 48) and they had children, Harry 20, Emily 17, Charles 13(my great great grandfather), Charlotte 10, Francis? 8 and George 4. As I say I have traced this using the census records 1901 - 1861 but cannot find anything proir to this. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated thank you. |

There are 5 James Hayes born 1810 on the 1861 census, another 9 born 1811. Which one is yours? |

That's better. Found them in 1861 so looked for children's names in 1851. Last name was mistranscribed as Hayre but someone has corrected it to Hayes. |

I'm kinda cheating. I happen to have the discs for BVRI (British Vital Records Index) and they happen to have records for Hursley, Hampshire. |

Brilliant thanks so much, how do you get hold of the discs? can you get them through the web? There are quite a few of my relatives on other branches that I'm struggling to find but started with this one by chance really. |

I believe that you can order the discs from the Familysearch website. Not sure how much they cost. There are people on this site who have purchased them recently because I remember seeing a post recently that there was a delay in receiving them because of a shortage in supply. |

Thank you for all your help. I've found out so much more than I would have done searching by myself. |
