Thanks very much for your help Edwin son of James and Rebecca was the brother of James 1832 who was my g.g.granfather he had children Alfred 1855, Edward 1857 (my g.granfather) then later on John ,Mary Ann and Bessie so I shall try and find their familes next I think. Trying to go down each one in turn don,t know if thats the right way to go about it but its a lot of fun . Until I started this I thought the family came from lancashire like I do. Once again many thanks Lynne

Aha. Bad info to start with!

When I was poking in the IGI I looked for James Pitman. We've got a marriage --

JAMES PITMAN
Spouse: REBECCA CHINN
Marriage: 19 OCT 1818 Weston Zoyland, Somerset, England
Source Information:
Batch Number: 7012018

Same submitted batch. I assume you've got that -- you do know your first post said the parents were Edwin and Elizabeth, right?

That batch seems to have christenings from the generations before after James, but not his generation.

However, there's the marriage of a John Pitman in 1814 who would likely be a brother or cousin.

Ah, more than one clan. There's a John Pitman christened 1800 who would be a different one. Son of William Pitman and Sarah Field.

No christening for James or Rebecca, alas. One or both of them might not have been from that place. I become useless at this point, being an ocean away, but I guess I'd say you're stuck having to go digging in original parish records. Or be like me, and hope that FreeREG hurries up!

Actually, FreeREG

http://www.freereg.org.uk

has a huge slew of Somerset Pitman christenings, so you might want to browse.

James and Elizabeth were Emmas Parents. Edwin was her younger brother 1830. James the next brother 1832 was my g.g.grandfather. How would I go about finding out if James 1796 had any brothers or sisters.

Linda -- I note that you and several other people (including one who has Emma 1828) have James Pitman 1795/6 in trees here at GR. And have Rebecca Chinn.

Nobody has a relevant Edmin Pitman born anytime 1755-1805. Including you. Que pasa??

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 30 Apr 2008 00:59

One note: James and Rebecca Pitman had children Edwin and Elizabeth.

Is it possible that *James* had parents Edwin and Elizabeth?

JaneyCanuck Report 30 Apr 2008 00:48

Linda -- I wouldn't be too quick to dismiss the 1861 Emma.

Note the husband's age. Your Emma would have been 33 in 1861 -- 24 at the time of the marriage in 1852.

The Emma in 1861 was supposedly born in 1836 -- she's 25 with a 6-yr-old daughter. At the time of the Pitman-Morris marriage in 1852, she would have been 16ish.

Methinks Emma may have been understatin her age. She may have understated it at the time she married -- since she was older than the groom. I have one individual I know of in my tree -- my gr-grfather's sister -- who did just that. Born in late 1854 (I finally found, after believing her lie for too long), she said she was 19 when she married in July 1875. Well, now, she was nearly 21. But her husband was 19. She maintained the fiction in the 1881 census.

Who knows, maybe she believed it? One year, a person is a child whose age is reported for the census by a parent. Ten years later, the next census, and the person is an adult reporting his/her own age -- which s/he may not have any real idea of.

Note that when Emma Pitman Morris died, her year of birth matches your Emma's (given that she died in Q1).

There's too much coincidence here to be coincidence, for me! The visitor in the 1861 household -- Ellen Pitman, exactly the right age to be the Ellen Pitman in the household with that Emma the previous census? And that Emma and Ellen are two of eight children?

I think that Emma Morris was for sure the Emma Pitman Gerri has traced through the earlier censuses.

But ... the parents don't match *your* Emma Pitman. Hmm.

So the question is: how do you know your Emma's parents' names?

Aha -- we have this in the IGI:

EMMA PITMAN
Christening: 04 FEB 1828 Weston Zoyland, Somerset, England
Father: JAMES PITMAN
Mother: REBECCA CHINN

Form submitted by a member of the LDS Church. The form lists the submitter's name and address and may include source information. The address may be outdated. Details vary. To find the form, you must know the batch and sheet number.
Source Information:
Batch Number: 7012018

Submitted info. But it looks good; very precise. A total of eight children for James and Rebecca are listed in the batch of christenings.

Maybe you could give the names of the other children in your Emma's family, with years of birth for any that you have, to help with trying to find the household?
