William Smith born 1825 in Tillington,Sussex, parents are William and Ann.

Maralyn they are not in Tillington on 1841 census. The only William Smith is born 1818 and married to Mary Smith.

Any idea where they could be?
Unfortunately 1841 doesn't give place of birth, only if born in or out of county.

Have you found him on any other census returns?

On 1851, there is a William Smith born 1826, Tillingham who is a lodger in Preston, Sussex Occ Ag lab,
could this be him.

There's this one on BVRI, all of the criteria seem to match:

SMITH, William Christening
Gender: Male
Christening Date: 15 Jan 1826 Recorded in: Tillington, Sussex, England
Father: William SMITH
Mother: Ann
Source: FHL Film 1468792 Dates: 1821 - 1856

He's the only Smith with those parents in Tillington. Could they have moved shortly after?

This is the nearest match I can find on 1841, looking at age of wife and children, it could be the second marriage for William Smith senior, his occ is gardener.

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 22 Apr 2008 18:49

Could this possibly be William's parents' marriage? It's from BVRI.
If it is, oh lucky you! A Smith marrying a Smith!

This looks like the 1841 family that Rutland Belle found. Already married in 1821:

SMITH, William Marriage
Wife: Annsley KILLICK
Marriage Date: 18 Nov 1821 Recorded in: Rotherfield, Sussex, England

Thanks you two.Any idea where the father William and Ansley were in 1851/61.if its not to much trouble. Thanks Maralyn

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 22 Apr 2008 19:11

Could this be him in 1851, even though the age is wrong. It says 31 but very difficult to read the original. Could he have lied to make himself older because he had an older wife?

1851 census
Tillington, Sussex
William Smith, head, 31, gardener, born Tillington
Sarah, wife, 36, born Sadsworth, Sussex

MargaretM Report 22 Apr 2008 19:13

What! Are you saying now that the father is William who was married to Ansley in Rotherfield and not the William who was married to Ann in Tillington?

Maralyn

Maralyn Report 22 Apr 2008 19:23

Hi
When i checked familysearch Williams parents were William and Ann,could it be Ann is short for Ansley?Thats the problem when the first son was named after the father,it gives you a brain ache.
