Hi Fiona,
The James Higgibottom in 1901 could fit the bill. Right age, right dob. He is an inmate at the Manchester Workhouse in Crumpsall, occupation Commercial Clerk, status Single.
I found a death for a James Higginbottom, in 1910, Prestwich which covers Crumpsall. I still can't find him elsewhere though.
I did find the emigration details for a Harry Higginbotham aged 44 who went to Australia on 11th August 1905, occupation Plumber. He was travelling alone.
If you don't hear anything else for a while, don't worry but my mother had a heart attack last night (she is 84) and I have been up most of the night at the hospital. She is at present having an angiogram but is stable.

Hello Fiona,
Many happy returns of the day!
Seems to me James was still alive in 1891 and, as you say, may have gone to Oz.
He didn't go to America as I checked that.

On Marriage certificate for his son Harry married in Australia to Margaret Hastie on 9,12.1891 father James is shown as gentleman.. Some gentleman, maybe he fled to OZ after birth of 3 children.
It is a thought.

Speak later, Thanks Fiona.

Hi Fiona,
I have searched EVERYWHERE for James Higginbotham with no luck. However here are 2 census entries for his parents.
1841 piece 131 fo.5 page 4
East Macclesfield, Prestbury, Cheshire
David Higginbotham, 45, Book K, Y= (born Cheshire)
Hannah, 35, Y
Hannah P, 20, Silk Weaver, Y
David, 15, Plumber & Glazier, Y
Charles, 14, Silk Piecer, Y
James, 10, Y
John, 7, Y

1851 census piece 2158 fo.322 page 1
Fence Street, Hurdsfield, Cheshire
David Higginbotham, 58, Book Keeper, Macclesfield
Hannah, wife, 48, Hurdsfield
John, son, 16, Silk Piecer, Macclesfield
John Clark, 45, lodger, Manager, Hurdsfield.

The IGI gives a Martha Clark Higginbotham christened 21st May 1828 at St Michael's, Macclesfield.

It is a fair bet that James was born in Macclesfield.
The only marriage for David I could find on the IGI was to Betty Clarke, Prestbury, 30th May 1813. I wonder if he remarried her sister?
You cannot always go by census information when women say they are Widows as sometimes they put this when they have been abandoned (or if they are really unmarried but with children).
I wish I could help you more but it is a blessed puzzle.
One little tip, if there is a long delay between messages, it is sometimes better to start a new thread with the updated information as it is easy to miss a reply amongst so many. Or, you can send a personal message to whoever has been helping.
Regards,
Kate

MESSAGE for Melanie Hannabus and/or Kathleen
Pitman or anyone else who wants to hear my saga.
I had help from these two ladies on 20 th April re. disappearance of my 4xg. grandfather James Higginbotham. Have since received his marriage cert. and birth cert. of his youngest child.
I added this info. to my threads on 14th May, have not heard from the ladies, so I now realise this was not correct proceedure. Please tell me what to do now. Thanks from very confused old Scottish lady, Fiona.

Hi to Melanie and Kathleen. I am hoping I am following the correct proceedure to pass on to you the information I have received from the marriage cert. of James Higginbotham and Martha Bollans.
They were married in Bradford on 1.8.1855. James was 23, Martha was 22.making them born in 1832 and 1833. James occupation was a clerk as was father David Higginbotham, living in Manchester at time of marriage.

The information on birth certificate for Jane Higginbotham, the youngest of the three children is as follows.

Born in Bradford in sub district of Bowling on 2.11.1862, father James Higginbotham a linen draper, who was informant on 18.11.1862. residence at Wakefield Road, Bowling.

I think David Higginbotham was born 1793. His wife Hannah (nee Clarke) was born in 1804. I have no other information other than the birth of James brother in 1835. He was called John.

This all seems very long winded , but I knew I would be in big trouble if I did not tell you EVERYTHING I know. Huge thanks again, Fiona

Have sent a p.m. to Melanie and Kate. I will order marriage cert. now for James & Martha. Thankyou Fiona

Kathleen

Kathleen Report 20 Apr 2008 18:19

Hi Fiona,
The best course of action is to get the marriage certificate of James and Martha. This should give his father and occupation and possibly his age.
There are just too many variations of James Higginbotham to make a guess.
The cert will cost £7.00 online through the GRO.

Still no sighting of James Higginbotham ?

Fiona

Fiona Report 20 Apr 2008 17:44

They are Higginbotham's Melanie. James the father is my biggest problem. I need his birth date, and the name of parents if possible.

Thanks, Fiona

I am very new to this, also wary. Martha Bollans was born in 1833, , in Bradford. In 1855 she married James Higginbotham who I believe to be my ggggrandfather Three children were born in Bradford . Clara in 1857, Harry in 1859 and Jane in 1862 On 1871 census Harry and Jane are with Martha and the Yates family, and Clara is with Bollans family. I can't find James anywhere. I do not have James date of birth or details of parents etc.
Is anyone out there patient enough to give me some help.?
Thankyou . Fiona in Edinburgh
