Trying To find Harrison/Abel

Trying to find ancestors of Pearl Abel b.1923 Thirsk and Ernest Arthur Harrison b.1919 Steyning.

Pearls parents I think were called John G Abel and Gertrude I Thompson as her MMN was Thompson and the marriage I have found is in the same area 2yrs before she was born. That is all I know of her as I think Gertrude was b,1902 and there isnt a birth in the right time for a John G Abel.

Ernest died 1981 in Darlington, I don't know anything about him and we think he was illegitimate as his MMN is Harrison, is there anything I could do to help me with me research other than ordering his cert.?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.
