It's latin ...... although I've never done any Latin.

Basically ... let's stop this

you might not be the only person who thinks what i said was an error...but like i have said im not the only one to have said so..so why should that make yous correct ??

pax!!

I only mentioned Jennifer's post 'cos she was clarifying what I had posted. That was telling you that I had also made a mistake!

I am not the ONLY person who thinks what you said was an error. Just as you obviously are not the only person who makes or has made that same error.

Just don't get so bloomin' defensive!

Just don't make the same error again lol!! (lol in case I have to spell it out for you!!)

BTW ........ I personally do read every post on a thread!!

Sylvia

Please don't tell me what i noted or didn't...Jennifers post never stated my name so i never read it, but yours i did

I have seen more people stated the exact same as what i have so if you think its an error then so be it

The answer to your question is quite simple ........................ because I didn't see the others!

Hope you don't think I was "getting" at you.

Yours is just the one I saw, and as it was an error I thought it important to correct it ............... as Jennifer has also pointed out.

And, as you will have noted ........ she also clarified what I said.

Do I get on my high horse? Nope! Even though I did know what she had posted, and had just not been clear enough in my posting.

Sylvia

Thank you for your clarification....... but why you have only just felt the need to point it out i don't know as i have seen a few others state the exact same thing

Just to clarify Sylvia's clarification.

Births were supposed to be registered, but the onus was on the Registrar to go out and get the information (not an easy task) until 1875, then the responsibilty of registration changed to the parents, omission punishable with a fine.

Registration of marriages and deaths was compulsory from the 1 July 1837, not September which was the quater they came under.

Then if all attempts to find a marriage have failed ........ consider the possibility that they didn't marry at all!

Living common-law was at least as common then as now .............. especially as it was almost impossible for the ordinary person to get a divorce.

Just a point of clarification ..............

registration of BIRTHS was not compulsory until 1875, but registration of marriages and deaths was compulsory from September 1837.

There may be gaps in the GRO reocrd (and therefore on freebmd etc) because information was not sent from the local office to the GRO offices in London.

That marriage looks good. Eliza was 33 at that time so McSkelly probably isn't her maiden name.

I am trying to find 3 marriages without success, George Chisholm ( Cumberland ) and Eliza ( Ireland ) 1861-1866, James Chisholm ( Cumberland ) and Jane Pagan ( Scotland ) 1845-1849, Robert Chisholm ( Cumberland ) and Elizabeth Scott ( Cumberland ) 1841-1846, All are resident on the 1841 census in Cumberland, there is no entry on the GRO for these marriages, looked at local parish records no sign, any ideas where to look or info would be of great help.
thanks Ken
