Hello Sylvia,
Thank you for the tip about less not more when making a search on freebmd. Also the bit about all of us having skeletons. Amazing what can be dug up about our ancestors!!
Best wishes,
Maureen

Maureen

you yourself can check all bmds from July1 1837 to about 1920 or 1925 on www.freebmd.org.uk .......... it's a free site.

It is a work in progress, as volunteers work to get all bmds upto 1983 onto the internet, and more and more are being added all the time, so you should keep going back.

One tip is to use less information rather than more!

The place names on freebmd (and anywhere else showing bmds) is for the place of registration, which is NOT the same as the place the event occurred ............. the place of registration is often the centre for a number of smaller communities.

The "date" given is for the quarter, March, June, September and December ......and as births have a 6 week grace period, you should always check the quarter after the one when you think the child may have been born, or the first quarter of the following year if you are just fishing.

Reggie

I corrected someone else last week re that 6 week period in which to register events.

I got hauled over the coals for doing it "what makes you do that now, I've been saying that for weeks and so have many other people. Why haven't you done it before?", etc etc!

The answer, of coruse, was that I hadn't seen it before that particular posting!

There seems to be a big mis-comprehension as to when the bmds had to be registered, and an unknown number of people are giving advice to others that ALL events had 6 weeks in which to be registered!!

Another advice thread needed? Sigh!

almost all of us have that skeleton in the cupboard, in one generation or the other!

In fact, in many communities, it seemed to be preferred that the bride was at least pregnant before marriage, if not actually have children. It proved she was fecund, and therefore there would be children to help the older generation!

So, it wasn't considered a skeleton in the cupboard then!

Hi All,
Many thanks for your help. Please forgive my ignorance or stupidity (not sure which?) you can tell I'm new at this!! So my grandparents didn't so much jump the gun as had a shotgun...wedding. So it's official we definitely have a skeleton in our Connor/Hilling cupboard!!!
Once again my grateful thanks.
Kind regards,
Maureen

The birth posted by Glitter Baby is the one you are looking for.

The system is that all bmd records are indexed in quarters.........so, a birth in July would be indexed under the July, August, September (Abbreviated to 'JAS'.....or 'September') quarter.

The marriage would have been registered almost immediately, as that is done by the registrar....not by the people getting married.

It is only for births that there is a six-week period in which the registration has to be made.

Incidentally, there is no need in this instance to search the index.....just go to freebmd and put in the first name, surname and year................

Maureen,

It's on FreeBMD.

Just use the middle initial when you search names.

Hi Linda & glitter baby,
My thanks for the info. I have checked each quarter for my mother's birth, but with no luck. So I'm not sure if I am going about things the right way.
Again my thanks.

Maureen

The births and marriages are recorded in quarter of years,
So the birth Sep 1912
means it was registered in July - Sept 1912, which would fit your mothers birth

the marriage recorded Jun 1912
means it was registered in April - June 1912. They could have married before that because you have six weeks ? (I forget) after the marriage to register it

GlitterBaby

GlitterBaby Report 19 Apr 2008 14:15

July birth would be registered in the quarter Jul - Sept

Hi Glitter Baby,
Many thanks for your input. However, I think this is another family. My mother (Rosina Emily Connor) was definitely born on 12th July 1912.

Maureen
