I am doing our tree and we have got stuck, we are trying to find the parents of William Melling born 1842. We have just sent for his wedding cert and it has come back with no father details on. They were from Upholland/Billinge/Ashton but there are so many Mellings we are confused. The list of his children read- <ary b1863, Margaret b1875, Ann b1867, William b1870, John b1871, Sarah b1873, James b1875, Emma b1878, Mathew b1880, Luke b1881 and Richard Edwin b1883. We have no knowledge of who died or lived we just have these details. William went on to marry an Elizabeth Unsworth b1846. On their wedding cert William was aged 22yrs, a labourer living Upholland. Elizabeth was aged 18yrs and from Billinge Higher End with a father JOhn Unsworth a nailmaker. If anyone can help it would be gratefully received. Many thanks Gary and Maureen |

It appears there were 2 William Mellings born in Upholland around 1842 so I'm going to stop there before I confuse matters even more |

The last one you put dying in 1916 is possibly ours, it looks like we will have to order a birth cert and hope and pray his father will appear on that. Any more help please post- much appreciated. Latest update-- after visiting the Wigan History Shop and showing them the wedding cert for William Melling and Elizabeth Unsworth, we were told that he was probably illegitimate as there being no father details. We checked the Parish records (ST Thomas's, Upholland) and found his baptism -we believe on the 11/10/1840- it had his mothers name as Mary Melling, no other details. We have looked and looked on every Census to try and find him including all the ones posted above of which some are William in his later life with his wife Elizabeth. Nothing of him at all in the 1841 or 1851 Census.......the closest we have got is the one when he is 10yrs and it has got him down as a Grandson with a Houghton family. Could the 'Houghton' have been his fathers name? Anyone with any ideas to pinpoint anything plese let us know. I will be ordering this Birth Cert soon in case any more info is on it. I seem to have jotted down on the same bit where I wrote his baptism details the words 'Wigan Parochial'!!! Thanks very much Gary and Maureen |
