Hi Sharon,

Unfortunately I do not know of any website you can search for a possible marriage, due to privacy laws.

I did find another website which may be able to either help you, or at least point you in the right direction.

About CLAN: What we're about
Close to half a million children in Australia in the 20th century were brought up in 'care': as state wards, foster children or Home children raised in orphanages, Children's Homes, and other institutions, and in foster care. They list amongst their services.

How to locate lost family members and friends.

Clontarf Boys is listed on their site

Clontarf Boys' Orphanage
Christian Brothers
Year opened: 1898
Year closed: 1983
CLAN members: Contact CLAN to make contact
email address: email [email protected].
www.clan.org.au

Sorry I can't be of more help.

bye Helen

Hi Sharon, try the Salvation Army - they are very good, and they operate in Australia as well as here in Britain. If anyone can make a sensitive approach it will be them.
Good luck

Hi Sharon,

Western Australia will still be asleep, it is 7am Friday morning in Qld and they are 2 hours behind us.

Let me know if you dont hear anything in a couple of days and I will ring them for you. Another thought have you made contact with the Clontarf Bros in Western Australia, if not I will see what I can find out for you.

bye for now

Hi helen, thankyou so much. Father Hudsons said that he has been to England twice and met family, but that apparently contact had broken down and obviously being adopted, John had already probably 'felt rejected' enough, so when the contact broke down(i assume she has good authority saying that) she feels that fiurther contact could only lead to more heart ache for John were that to break down too.. little does she realise how different we feel about it to the people he has already met. It is hard, we know how it in't easy and there is a lot of upset and hurt involved here, and the last thing we want to do is to cause him more heart ache. We just want to get to know our uncle, and now even more so, for us not just for his brother. It is so difficult in these circumstances, and knwoing what to do for the best is hard. The only thing we can think of is to try this again and see if we cant find him ourselves. You have been a great help to us Helen and we are very grateful for that, we just wondered now if anyone has any ideas, as we are not getting help from the relative authorities and the only other advice we got from the other one is they will try to locate him and test the water, that could take a while and we don't have that amount of time! they may decide on the same course of action and that contact is not in his best interests, many thanks again for all the help and support

Hi Sharon,

No apology necessary, I was only trying to point out that there is no point in people duplicating what has already been done.

From what you say Father Hudsons will not give you even the State he was/is living in, as it would make it so much easier to trace him if we knew. Unfortunately in OZ each state has their own "Red Tape"

The only thing I can think of is the electoral rolls, but once again not sure if I can do a Commonwealth search here in Qld. I will give them a ring to see what I can find out.

What about that help service in Western Australia, were they able to give you some assistance.

Sorry to hear about your Uncle, hopefully with the help of people on this board you will be able to reunite him with John.

bye Helen

Hi Sharon,

So that people do not duplicate, it might be beneficial if you refer to your original posting 25th March, 2008.

"Trying to find family abroad"

A few people including myself tried to assist you in your endeavours to find John T Lawrence. On the 31st March you advised that;

" Just to let you all know, I have just had a phone call from Father Hudsons, the Social Worker has found his file, and he has made contact with them in the last few years and they have an address for him, whether he still lives there we don't know, but they are going to check and try to initiate contact"

Our understanding was that you would keep us posted of any updates.

Did you obtain an address from Father Hudsons ? That would give us a starting point. Was it in Western Australia, or had John moved interstate?

Did you contact the other organisation that I gave you in W.A which was set up " to meet the on-going needs of former child migrants and Australian born ex-residents and students of Christian Brothers' institutions and to help people in a number of areas: family tracing, literacy classes, no-interest loans, supportive counselling, and funded travel for family reunification".

http://www.cberss.org/index.html

Email: [email protected]

Were they unable to help you either?

I take you have contacted Clontarf Bros? as it was established in 1953, another group of British “orphans” arrived on the New Australia, destined for Clontarf Boys Town, Western Australia.

If you could give us an update that would help us try to find your uncle.

bye Helen
