Hi again Jan,

Wow, that's brilliant, no I haven't been in touch with her at all, but certainly will do now, don't know how far she'll get on such patchy info as we have but definitely worth a shot, I'll get onto it straight away.

Many many thanks once again, you've been wonderful.

Kindest regards,

Carol.

I have a good few Barnes's in my family tree who originated from the Bristol/Gloucestershire area.

My grandmothers mothers maiden name was Barnes (Violet Barnes) and her father was Henry Barnes, her grandfather being William Barnes.

Feel free to message me regarding this and I will gladly give you access to my tree.

Hi Dea,

Many thanks for your reply, it is greatly appreciated. This looks like it may be another promising lead, I will look into it, as I will with all others that have been sent to me.

I can't believe how wonderful everyone has been on this site in helping me out with what has turned into quite an obsession for me now.

There have been many clues along the way, and many Audrey's, all of whom so far we have managed to eliminate from our search, but you never know, this could be just the right one we are looking for.

Many many thanks for taking the time and trouble to help us out.

Kindest regards,

Carol.

Hi Carol,

Just a 'snippet' - I searched Bmd etc. and found the Audrey Barnes born Sep 1939 had a sister Eunice born Manchester 1934 Ref 8d 452.

Haven't yet found any brothers but there is a Louise on this site who has an Audrey and a Eunice - right ages. - perhaps you should contact her, if only to eliminate this Audrey?

Hi Jan,

Flippin' heck, how can you call yourself bored when you are doing so much on here to help people like myself. I can't begin to tell you how much I appreciate all you are doing for us.

I will check out the leads you have given me and perhaps buy a certificate if it proves to be a strong lead. Also yes please send me any other clues/info you have come across, that would be great. Not sure where the York/Yorkshire connection comes into it yet, I mean I know people move around but as I say Audrey gave birth in Buckrose (as was) York, she worked, we assume, round that area, and her family were all farmers and as farms are generally kept in the family and family run, the general assumption is they would have lived in the same place for generations? A lot of presuming I know, but we have got this far on a lot of it so we'll persevere!

Many thanks again Jan for all your help, all it will take is one shred of evidence and hopefully all will fall into place.

Kindest regards,

Carol.

Hiya DD,

Many thanks for your reply, wow you have been busy. Looking through I think Audrey from Manchester and Audrey from Haslingden could be potential leads because as far as we know our Audrey didn't have a middle name, also she was 24 when she gave birth in 1964, so we estimate 1940 as her year of birth give or take a year depending on the month, so probably 1938 and 1942 would be too far out in terms of age, plus there are a couple of other Audreys worth taking a closer look at from December 1940, so quite a few clues going on there.

I really can't thank you enough for taking the time to find all this info and send it to us, your time and efforts are very much appreciated.

Many thanks once again,

Kindest regards,

Carol.

Hi Suzanne,

Many thanks for your reply, thing is I don't think it's as straight forward as it seems! Audrey stayed at 56 Heworth Green, York, which was a mother and baby home at the time. Mums stayed there for 6 weeks prior to birth, gave birth at Westow Croft which was a maternity home, then went back to Heworth Green for up to 6 weeks after the birth, if they wished to, prior to baby going for adoption. What we can't find out is where baby Robin was between birth and adoption 6 months later, wouldn't appear he was with mum, but once again all leads head nowhere!!

Many many thanks though for taking the time to reply and for your help, as I say any snippet of info whatsoever is most gratefully received.

Many thanks once again,

Kindest regards,

Carol.

Could you look up electoral register for the 6 months that baby Robin seems to be with mother?

Hi,

Yes tried all sites with no luck as no specific dates to go on. Also tried mailing various councils, churches, adoption sites etc with no luck. Ha if only it was like being on tv it would be perfect!
Thanks once again,

Kindest regards,

Carol.

Hi Carol

Have you searched all available search sights i.e ancestry.co, freebmd etc.? It's not as easy as they make out on television is it but don't give up.

Hi Heather, many thanks for taking the time to reply to my message. No, there is no fathers name on any of the papers, all we know is father was 23 years old, a year younger than Audrey herself, but without a specific date or a name we can get no further with that one. No other names or dates on any paperwork, just a few general physical descriptions and as I say, the most vital documents are missing from the adoption file. We know father was a farmer, as were mothers brothers as this is stated in general descriptions of family in adoption file. Really bizarre though the info they thought important then, for example describing someones hands, but then really basic info for some of the more important parts.

Many thanks once again for your time and interest.

Kindest regards,

Carol.

Hi Carol

Is the father's name mentioned anywhere on the certificates or adoption papers, how did you find out he was a farmer?
You also mention the mother had 4 brothers & 1 sister, have you tried looking for them? If you can locate them on the birth or marriage records they may be able to throw some light on the situation.

Good luck with your quest

Hi Patricia,

Many thanks for your reply. Isn't it so frustrating, that area seems to be a bit of a twilight zone! I will definately try the local paper though, sounds like a great idea and I have nothing to lose. We seem to know so much, but at the same time absolutely nothing if that makes any sense? We have so many details, but without anything concrete to go on like a date or place of birth for mother, we just keep coming up on that dead end time and time again.

Many many thanks once again though for taking the time to reply and for your advice re local papers. Please keep in touch if you would like, you never know we may be able to help each other out.

Kindest regards,

Carol.

Hi Julie,

Many thanks for your reply, definately Buckrose on the original birth certificate, as I say this area doesn't exist anymore but was definitely the place of birth. We are looking at mothers year of birth as being 1940 as adoption files say she was 24 at the time of birth in 1964, and mothers name was/is Audrey.

Many thanks again though for taking the time to look into this and reply.

Kindest regards,

Carol.

Hi Carol
I'm trying to so the same as you and like you getting no where!
My husband was born in Westow Croft, Yorkshire in 1944 and l am trying to trace his family.
You could do what l did and put an appeal in the local paper Malton and Pickering Mercury. The assistant editor is Sheila Elgey and her e.mail address is [email protected]. She was very helpful. I'm afraid l didn't get any response, but you might just be lucky.
You might beable to find some more local papers to try as well.

I really wish you well and if l think of anything else that might help will get in touch.

regards Patricia.

Hi could the area you are looking for be Appleton Roebuck, Yorks and not Buckrose? I have an Alice Barnes in my tree who was born there but I don't think she would be the A Barnes you are looking for as she was born in 1885.

A bit of a plea really to anyone with the surname Barnes or who knows of or has Barnes in their family.

Still trying, to no avail, to find the birth family of my husband Anthony.

He was born on 9th July 1964, in Buckrose (which doesn't seem to exist in its own right anymore), in the Norton/York area of North Yorkshire, but was adopted in January 1965. We know his name prior to adoption would have been Robin Barnes, and his mothers maiden name was A Barnes. Mothers address at time of birth was 56 Heworth Green York, which we know to be a mother and baby home, he was actually born at Westow Croft, a maternity home. Audrey was a childrens nurse at 4 Crown Cottages, Humberton Helperby. Robin (Anthony) was adopted in Jan 1965 by a family in Bradford, West Yorkshire. Audrey was 24 at the time of Robin's (Anthony's) birth, so we summise her year of birth would have been 1940 +/- a year depending on the month. We have a copy of the adoption certificate and also the original birth certificate and have done all the right things so far including meeting with social services where we have now obtained adoption file, but even so there are crucial documents missing from this. So without a date of birth or any other info for mother we are back to square one. All we know is mother's name, the fact that father was a farmer, as were mothers 4 brothers, she also had one sister who had 2 children of her own, so we summise that there are quite a lot of birth relatives out there somewhere?!

We are assuming that mother and family came from the York/Yorkshire area because that was where Robin (Anthony) was born, although she could have originated anywhere. Also the fact that Buckrose isn't an area anymore, 56 Heworth Green is now a private residence, Westow Croft isn't a maternity home and we can find no record of mothers place of work in Humberton Helperby only serves to hinder our search even more. We have been searching for several years now, becoming increasingly more frustrated with every wrong turn and dead end we encounter.

If anyone could shed even the tiniest glimmer of light whatsoever on our quest, we would truly be eternally grateful.

Many many thanks to all for taking the time to read this, and many thanks in advance for any clue you could provide, no matter how small or insignificant it may seem to you, it could be the light at the end of the tunnel that we are looking for.

Yours ever hopefully

Carol and Anthony.
