I'm trying to find a marriage between Thomas Ashby and a Sarah of unknown origins. They were living in Frant, Sussex in the 1770's and 1780's. ( This is not the Thomas Ashby who operated the Bartley Mill in Frant at that time). The marriage is not on the Sussex Marriages CD, or in the Frant parish registers, so I think Sarah must have been from Kent or possibly West Sussex, or even further afield. Their first child was born in 1777. If anyone can suggest places to look, that would be great. (I'm in Australia...) Thomas would be my great (x4) grandfather.

Hi Derrick,
You need you look on LDS website Familysearch.org
I have found a Thomas Ashby married Sarah Sayers 14/10/1779 Buxted Sussex. It's the only one that came up.
Hope this is correct.

Sorry guys, I have looked in the IGI, and I know about both of those. Thomas Ashby & Sarah Sayers lived in Lamberhurst (right next door to Frant, I know). The Thomas who married Elizabeth Hoad was the Bartley Mill miller, and he had previously married a Sarah too... These people were so confusing, all having the same names...

Thomas Ashby (c.5 Mar 1755 in Mayfield and son of Thomas Ashby & Susannah Dale , buried 13 Jul 1836 Lamberhurst) married Sarah Sayers (born 1761 in Buxted and daur of William Sayers, buried 5 Jan 1827, Lamberhurst) on 14 Oct 1779 in Buxted.

"Monumental Inscriptions in the churchyard of Lamberhurst, Kent" (east of Frant)
Noted in June 1923 by L. L. Duncan.
411. Sarah wife of Thomas ASHBY of this parish, 30th December 1826 aged 66.
Left issue six sons and three daughters.
Above Thomas Ashby, 8th July 1836 aged 80.

This suggests to me that there was another son born circa 1791/92, if one assumes that left issue means surviving children in 1826.
