The local library holds material on AuL:

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LAN/Ashton-under-Lyne/

[Edit - I was hoping their list of holdings would include electoral rolls, but it seems they are not at that library - I wonder if it will be the Manchester library for these?]

[Edit2 - there is a Rootschat member who has just (Feb/Mar 08) been doing some 1901 to 1915 AuL electoral roll look-ups]

Where someone marries is not proof of where they were born so John could have been Irish, Scottish, Welsh or from overseas

Hi Reg

I did previously have a thread going trying to find my great grandad but have not had any luck. Seem to have hit a brick wall as didn't realise there was so many Bradleys. I recieved the marriage certificate that you mentioned last week and it says that John Bradley was 26 when he married in 1914 and he was a carter. He was a bachelor residing at 18 Cotton Street. His fathers name was Henry Bradley and he was a cuttler but was deceased at the time of his sons marriage. I have managed to trace the Wootton family back to the 1700s. Hope this information helps.

Kind regards

Danielle

They married in 1914 but was trying to work out if one of the families lived at the address prior to the marriage.

This is the marriage.............

Name: John Bradley
Year of Registration: 1914
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
Spouse's Surname: Wootton
District: Ashton Under Lyne
County: Cheshire, Lancashire
Volume: 8d
Page: 860

The chances that they were at the same address 13/14 years earlier are small.

If you wish to find these people in 1901, tell us their ages when they married, and the names and occupations of each of their fathers

When did this marriage take place?

David

David Report 16 Mar 2008 11:53

Both of them were said to be living at that address but maybe one family lived there in 1901 so it would either be John Bradley or Mary Wootton?

Is 18 Cotton Street where they said they (or one of them) was living?

If so, can you give us a name, and we can see if we can get at it that way.

There is a Cotton Street in Ashton, according to the address search on this site:

http://www.1901census.nationalarchives.gov.uk

The numbers run up to 192, but 24 is the lowest even number. Is there any chance that some transcriber in the process from the church to the certificate missed off the first digit and it ought to be 118? Or some other mistranscription?

Cotton Street in Leigh is just to the north west of the junction of the A578 and A579, but Leigh is a long way west of Ashton-under-Lyne. What made you suggest Leigh earlier? Might they have travelled to Ashton from Leigh for some reason? (Although I thought there was a rule about living in the parish if you are married by banns - so to marry elsewhere you need at least a temporary address or a licence to marry in another parish). Are there any other clues on the marriage certificate?

Hi Danielle,

I've had a look on Multimap and Ashton-under-Lyne is east Manchester. This seems to rule out the two Accrington findings, since Accrington is quite a long way north of there (near Blackburn).

I'm not sure about West Leigh - I'll see if I can locate that too.

I've had a look on the marriage certificate and there is no sub-district. All it says is the district of Ashton-under-lyne in the county of Lancashire.

Kind regards

Hi Danielle,

the marriage certificate should have the registry district and the sub-district across the top, to help identify which of the addresses Jim has found might be the relevant one.

The only information i have is from my great grandparents marriage certificate and all it says is 18 Cotton Street. They were married in Ashton Lancashire if this helps.

Danielle

Lancashire is the county.

It's quite a large county

There used to be lots of cotton mills, and weavers working in their own homes before that.

I think there might be a number of Cotton Streets!

The name of the town/village is very important!!

You can actually search the 1901 Census by address if you go ot the 1901 Census site ...... but you it is then pay to view the actual image.

The rest of us who use ancestry have to have more information to find an address.
