Worth trying the University, I should think. Also you need to look at that file at Kew if you want more detail

That is all fantastic.
He went to Leeds University and became a Professor there.
Do you think that Leeds Uni would have some info about him being in the army for them?

I've found lots of entries for him in London Gazette (I agree - that site is a nightmare!)

19/2/1917 2nd Lt (temp Lt) SJ Curtis is now seconded for duty with MGC (this is Machine Gun Corps) 29/1/1917

2/7/1917 SJ Curtis to be Lt and to remain seconded to MGC

16/1/1923 LT SJ Curtis , late North'd Fus to be Lt for service with Leeds Univ Cont with precedence as from 2/7/1920

He resigned his commission, according to the Gazette 18/12/1929

S.P
his letter was 2.9.17.
Stanley mentions about his promotion will give him an extra 7/- a week, which will be very useful to them!!

Earlier in the thread I posted about an Officers service record for an SJ Curtis being available at Kew. You said "That's him, but there's nothing on his service record" You need to look at this file, to see if it's for him, and if so, should be quite a bit of info in it, although officers files do vary. Not available online, so you'd have to go, or get someone to go for you, or you can order it online, but as you don't know for sure that it's him, perhaps this isn't such a good idea, unless they would confirm for you whether it's him or not.

Ann,
What file is it that you are referring to.
I haven't been to Kew to see the service records.
The only info I have myself is letters that have been written by him from "The Front" and his Medal Card that is from the National Archives.
I have tried looking at W.W.1 records on Ancestry but I can't find any mention of him.

Susan

Army List is available at Kew, and possibly other large libraries. Check with your nearest.

You didn't answer my question about his service records. Have you seen his file?

Susan

Susan Report 7 Mar 2008 15:58

Ann
where would I have access to the Army List?

Susan

Susan Report 7 Mar 2008 15:56

Stanley mentions in a letter that he had got his
2nd STAR back again !
He asked his wife if she had seen it in the Times

He also mentions for her not to send out his "other" stars as he will come and get them as he is due leave after a Capt. Duckworth who is on leave in England.

The Army List would tell you how long he served, and with which

regiment.

Have you actually seen his service record from the National Archives? Not sure what you mean - there must be SOME info!

Susan

Susan Report 7 Mar 2008 14:19

Sick Parrott, Can you please tell me what MIC is. I don't know MIC

Susan

Susan Report 7 Mar 2008 07:22

Thank you for your replies Ann and Lesley. Also the nudge from Susan.

Stanley James Curtis was born 1893 in Reading, Berkshire.
Ann that is him, but there is no info on his N.A records.
He had a very interesting life that is why I am trying to trace his army career to start with. He wrote books and they are still used today in the Education departments.

Surviving officers service records are name indexed on the National Archives catalogue. There is a S J Curtis, Lieutenant, listed. Unfortunately the index doesn't give full name or regiment, but it seems quite possible that this might be him.

Susan Report 6 Mar 2008 20:46

Hi,
Stanley James Curtis was in the Northumberland Fusiliers in World War 1, and also a Machine Gunner.

I have got his medal card from National Archive print out. It mentions that he was a Lieutenant and 2nd Lieutenant.
From letters that he had written he mentions a star.
I seem to have hit a brick wall with this.

How can I find out what his Battalion etc was?
Any help I would appreciate,
Thank you,
Sue
