The reason i prefer FreeBMD is you can click on the registration district and it shows you what is covered

So the marriage the distict was Hailsham which shows up a Blue colour click that and another page opens

No Ancestry won't tell you what is on the certificate, but you can use the census to cross ref everything, say like if you get Lilians M/C & dad is down as John and is a Carpenter..then you can look on the census for that info

Certificates will let you know you are on the right path, and that whatever info you have in your tree you know its right

I do hope that makes sense as im not to good at getting it from my head to paper lol

Yup, I've been on there, am now going to sort my note book out - could get confused with these names and dates - also really need to jot down the site that I have got the information from - keep going backwards and forewards and then forget where I saw what!

If I subscibed to Ancestry, would I get, for example and a marriage certificate, the names of both parties and their parents, or do you still have to send off for certificates?

For Birth, Marriage & Deaths i used this one

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

And its free..though for Lilian's birth i used Ancestry, as FreeBMD was on a go slow

It's wierd, when i put nan's date of birth in - nothing and have tried all conotations of her name!! This Lilian S seems to be the right age - would I be able to order a certificate if i don't know her parents names?
This Lilian S was born in polegate, sussex in 1886 - (my nan was born 21/01/1886)can find this ones mother and grandparents!! but struggling to get a lead on my own!!

moggymum Report 3 Mar 2008 16:14

I am trying to establish if this lady was my great grandmother, and if this Alice is the same Alice F who appears in the 1891 census (age 31, married to a Cox and with 4 year old Lilian S cox - poss my grandmother)

So, just trying to cross reference and rule out/in really!!

Am I going about it the right way?
