Just to update things ... I have still not got beyond George down my Vincent line. I have accepted that his wife Rebecca (Rebekkah) was born in Stinsford and the Chamberlain line goes back from there through the Bishops' Transcripts. The family were cordwainers.

Rebecca's mother was a Bishop and there are dozens of those nearby in Fordington (on the outskirts of Dorchester) and there are connections back to Long Bredy.

Last summer we cycled all round the area as part of the annual Dorset Historic Churches Trust fundraiser. We started at Melcombe Horsey where George married Rebecca (and where he's buried) and passed through Dewlish (loads of Vincents there!), Milborne st Andrew where George's son James found his wife Martha Gover and on to beautiful Stinsford (where Thomas Hardy's heart is buried in the churchyard).

An amazing day.

Thanks Malcolm for the update glad you have "found"
her

At last, the mystery of Rebecca is solved. She did come from Stinsford and she died in Melcombe Horsey in 1841. The reason I could find her on the Dorset OPC site is that she is missing from the transcription! I found her on the Bishops Transcripts microfiche in the Family History Centre in London.

My sincere thanks to all who responded.

I am still reluctant to link Rebecca to mr grx4 grandfather although the circumstantial evidence is fairly strong. Next month I will visit Dorchester where I might uncover more. If I do, I will update this thread.

Thank you all for your kindness.

Hello,

Thank you all for your information. I have the death cert for the Rebecca in 1857 and it isn't mine. This Rebecca died in Piddlehinton and was the widow of William Vincent, Ag Lab. She was 85 thus birth 1772-ish. Death reported by daughter Martha (onfusing since my Rebecca had a daughter Martha (MY GGGGrandma) but my Martha was in Sunderland by then.

Yes, my Rebecca is almost certainly one of the Stinsford Chamberlains (Chamberlaynes) but I cannot prove it ... yet. I guess it will await a trip to Dorchester and the archive.

James (1838) is the oldest of his generation. My gggrandfather William (b1857) was his baby brother. Shortly after his birth, his parents moved to Clifton before heading north to Sunderland.

Onwards and .... sideways?

Please post death info when you have it then. The search will continue if it is'nt her who has been "promoted to glory". Good Salvation Army words for the dead

Diplodicus

Diplodicus Report 21 Jan 2009 15:51

Could be but I have no way of knowing unless the death cert confirms that "my" Rebecca had already been "promoted to glory". I am fairly confident that she was born in Stinsford/Bockhampton so more unlikely to be the same.

Yes, the OPC site is simply the bee's knees!

Many thanks for your clue.

Just to confuse matters, it is highly likely that George married ...

Rebecca/Rebekkah Chamberlain/Chamberlayne who was born in Stinsford (outside Dorchester) although I can't prove it. Their son James sometimes lists his birthplace as "Lwr Bockhampton" which is a hamlet within Stinsford parish.

I await delivery of a death certificate for Rebecca Vincent who died in Dorchster in 1854. If it is "my gggggrandmother" then she didn't marry William Cross.
