It differentiated them from the West Indies - in the Caribbean.

FamilyFogey Report 26 Feb 2008 11:45

Back in the Victorian times East Indies referred to India as well as those areas - most of the time referring to the east indies meant India.

My ancestors will of 1815 mentioned his son in the East Indies - who was in India.

Many census entries give East Indies as a place of birth - when the person was born in India.

PM me when you get the cert Gill - as I can probably give you some advice for the India side of things.

Think of East India Company...

Anyway - there is still a chance that the birth of Mary has not been transcribed on any online site yet - or that her birth record was never sent to England - as that wasn't too uncommon.

I still believe it should be next to Mary's name instead of John's going from not being able to find her in 1881, 1871 or 1861 and from the place of birth in 1891.

It might be that Bastock/Bostock could be another married name - perhaps she was a widow and not born as that?

Hi Alex

Yep, I agree with you on this one.

I usually try to play detective for a while, before investing in any certificates, to see if I can find out if I am on the right track by 'other means' .

i.e sometimes you know you are correct when in one of the census, another family member, mother in law or sister in law etc is staying with the family - you know then that you have found the correct person & therefore partner, children etc.

Here, however, I cant make head nor tail of it so will need to buy the marriage cert I think.

Really appreciate everyones help though.
Many thanks
Gill.

Reg - East Indies is India.

FamilyFogey Report 26 Feb 2008 11:27

As it says 'Not British Subject' in 1901 it is possible that her birth/baptism was at a church not governed by the British Empire and therefore copies of their registers were not sent to England.

I definitely think the marriage certificate is the way to go to find out anything more about the elusive Mary. She might not be about in 1881 if she was still in India at that time.

Nothing coming up on those sites for John Edward Hickling in India either - so that birth in Leicester is right for him - so I would imagine the East Indies birth was meant to go by her name and the enumerator got them mixed up.

Well seeing as the 1891 census gives Mary as born in India British Subject and then the 1901 census gives John as being born in the East Indies not British subject it seems there has been a mix up along the way and you will have to determine who was born where!

I have not found much on Bastock's in India on FamilySearch, Fibis or on the British Library India Office search - some Bostock's but I think the most important thing you need to do to get that next step backwards is to order their marriage certificate.

Just a thought....if 1860 is her correct birth, she may be on the 1861 census......

Would someone be so kind as to take a quick look for her in 1861, Leicester? (hopefully there wont be too many with the same name).

Many thanks
Gill

Thanks Alex

I will keep tying, she seems to be quite elusive!

Gill - also worth keeping in mind that a surname like Bastock is likely to be mistranscribed as Bostock or other variations. A while back I did some paid research for someone looking for a Louisa Bostock and on each census she was down as a different spelling!

Mary Bastock born c1860 is in my tree, married (in 1882) to John Edward Hickling, born 1860, Barrow upon Soar, Leicester. I know of Johns family, but know nothing of Mary's.
I know that they had 5 children.

1901 census shows John Edward Hickling aged 30 a Boxcutter born Barrow, Leic & Mary his wife aged 28 from INDIA - a British Subject. although it also says born Leicester? ?
I believe that she may have actually been born in Barrow upon Soar.

Can anyone please find her birth record?

Or offer any help / advise as to how to find her family details?
Many thanks
