It differentiated them from the West Indies - in the Caribbean. |

Back in the Victorian times East Indies referred to India as well as those areas - most of the time referring to the east indies meant India. |

Reg - East Indies is India. |

As it says 'Not British Subject' in 1901 it is possible that her birth/baptism was at a church not governed by the British Empire and therefore copies of their registers were not sent to England. |

Nothing coming up on those sites for John Edward Hickling in India either - so that birth in Leicester is right for him - so I would imagine the East Indies birth was meant to go by her name and the enumerator got them mixed up. |

Well seeing as the 1891 census gives Mary as born in India British Subject and then the 1901 census gives John as being born in the East Indies not British subject it seems there has been a mix up along the way and you will have to determine who was born where! |

Just a thought....if 1860 is her correct birth, she may be on the 1861 census...... |

Gill - also worth keeping in mind that a surname like Bastock is likely to be mistranscribed as Bostock or other variations. A while back I did some paid research for someone looking for a Louisa Bostock and on each census she was down as a different spelling! |

Mary Bastock born c1860 is in my tree, married (in 1882) to John Edward Hickling, born 1860, Barrow upon Soar, Leicester. I know of Johns family, but know nothing of Mary's. |
