Hi Diane,

Know the feeling. I have a marriage cert that states soldier and 3 months later on a birth cert it says general labourer - who knows why. If I remember rightly the James in question came to London very early on, so he could have been from a farming family.

Good luck on the rest of your search.

Juliet, thanks very much for trying.. I had dismissed the London James due to occupation..

Its a bit frustrating, as you're never 100% sure on father's details on marriage certs, and its a common name.. and its London.. and lots of girls came into London from farming families for domestic service, so its a needle in a haystack!

Your time is appreciated though.

thanks again,

Diane

Unfortunately nothing more.

Looking back over this I see you said that James was supposed to be a farmer. I honestly don't know what a Commercial Clerk is, but farmer sounds much better. I'll see what I can unearth with this.

Looking at the original Florence is 10 months old. Dad James is a commercial clerk born Surrey, Prestow? Presumably thay called son James, John later to avoid confusion.

Just a thought.

Vera, my problem is there are several Florence Evans in London in 1901, but I have no way of verifying them to be correct.

I have looked through them all, but none are at her marital address, so from then on I am just guessing?!

:-s

Diane

Diane Report 25 Feb 2008 14:45

Reg - there are also a lot of births with no middle name.. just Florence Evans, presumably it could have been any of those too? I am wondering about whether to send for those 2 with a ref check on father James.. and yes, I did wonder if James was a fabrication..

Juliet - thankyou, no I hadn't found that one, but no occupation given for her at marriage, so I don't think it would be her, but a good find though!

Thanks both..

Possble births...based on declared age at marriage

Florence Elizabeth Evans 1880 Apr-May-Jun Wolverhampton Shropshire, Staffordshire, West Midlands

Florence Elizabeth Evans 1879 Apr-May-Jun Carnarvon Anglesey, Caernarvonshire

Of course, the 'deceased' father may have been dreamed up for the sake of propriety........

I need a fresh look for some ideas:

I have a marriage certificate arrived today, which was supposed to help me find the parents of Florence Elizabeth Evans, but I am still stuck.

Marriage was 18/04/1903, Florence is a 23yo spinster. Father given as James Evans dec'd, a farmer.

Her address at marriage is 2, Warlborough Road, Wood Green, which I have checked, and existed in 1930, but doesn't seem to today.

The marriage was at Hackney register office.

I can't find Florence with James in the 81/91 census, or in 1901 with her father, or on her own at the Wood Green address. The Florence who is a daughter of James in Worcestershire, cross references to a birth record of a Florence May Evans, so I don't think she is the right one.

what else can I do to try to find her?

I have no idea where she may have come from!
