Response times.....3 minutes,..... thats better than you get from the boys in blue............... GR may not respond as quickly, but obviously us fully paid up, hard working , conscientious, members do a very good job...... so I think we should all give ourselves a pat on the back......lol.

The average response time to a query is less than 3 minutes. Are we asking too much to expect someone needing help to hang around for that length of time?
I agree that a few queries don't get replies for a lot longer but in this situation we would be unreasonable to expect the poster to hang around for hours.

My first sweeping gesture would be to listen to every one, stop sending stock"we are looking into it" replies and ask the people what they needed. All instructions would be in simple English.

My first offering is for a buddy system where newbees could link up with a more advanced member who would help them along the way ??

yes I've watched all those Tv programmes in my time, Yes I do have a degree but you couldnt be more wrong about gen. Its soooooooooo facinating even complete strangers histories. I wish I'd paid more attention in school!!!!

It all comes back to having a little respect for each other.

I sometimes think people forget the people doing the look ups are doing it for free, and most of us who do the look ups have spent money subscribing to sites to en- able us to help them.

I totally agree.... Think sometimes though the way I word my requests is a bit old fashioned but don't care as I too was brought up with manners

I'm rapidly approaching the point where I will ignore any request which is worded like a demand........

'Census/bmd look up REQUIRED/NEEDED'..etc

I'm of the generation which was brought up to say 'Please may I have..............', or 'Would someone please..........'

Another example of this is the offer by Katrina to do look ups in Aus and Canada. The thread is being nudged by requests and Katrina herself hasn't posted since Nov 9th 2007. Why do people keep requesting on this thread when it's obvious Katrina is not around. There are other people offering the same look ups!!!

I put a post on here for help last night and then called it a day at about 10pm. When I checked back this morning I had a reply so PMd that person to say Thankyou and the reason I didnt reply last night but wanted to let them know I hadn't just gone off and left it. I thought that would be better to do that incase I replied to my original plea for help and the person who replied didn't get to see it.

I have been using the board for a while now and only just realised what My Thread was for!!

As a newbee to message boards I found it really hard to find the original thread as people offering to look things up may have up to 100 new messages in between.. anyway then I discovered the "My threads" option on the left of the screen which solved this problem. As a working Aussie I have to be patient as you guys are asleep when i add to a list and then by the time a reply is added I am asleep etc..
So on behalf of anyone who was also very excited to get an answer to a posting a big thanks to all who answer!!
I always add a thankyou and (usually another question) but there then doesn't seem to be an answer...

Moggie, I agree with the others & would like to add that not all websites manage their boards the same way so new people are often confused.

No, don't delete your stuff for reasons given in other posts.

I've always found a pm to say there is some more information on their thread is usually received with enthusiasm.

I agree, I think it does have a lot to do with how often ppl check but also it took me a while to figure out that clicking on "My threads" in the Top Tips box was the best way to keep track of the ones I had posted on and which were currently active. Hopefully this is in the tips for newbies somewhere! :-)

Don't delete it Moggie, they will hopefully get around to reading it and replying. Sometimes I think ppl get so enthusiatic when they first see how much is on this site that they post left right n centre and then can't remember what they have posted and where!

If you go to the boards on Ancestry they have a liitle orange marker notifying that a posting has been read ... too much to expect on here I suppose?

There seems to be a lot of this going on at the moment.....people posting, and not then coming back to the threads............ I wouldn`t delete my findings as then its a waste of every ones time, as the poster will probably just request the same again and then someone has to go back over previously found information. As Lewella and Margaret have pointed out a lot of people arn`t on here everyday.....they`re not all addicted like us...... lol....... but it would be nice if when they posted they hung around to answer any replies, as often the info given isn`t nearly enough to go on.

It happens quite often, Moggie. I never delete my postings, I think that's just mean when it doesn't do any harm to leave them there. After all, we don't know why there was no acknowledgement, perhaps family problems or sudden illness.

I have yet to discover why folks who ask for a look up say thankyou by PM, by which time I've forgotten what it was about. The Pms come with the real name and the thread I have replied on is their Board name Get it ??? No neither do I
It would be nice to know, that they appreciated the help given or have even bothered to look for my reply ???

Aww, Moggie. Don't forget, a lot of people don't get on the computer every day. Also, some of the new ones think that they will be getting a message letting them know that someone has posted to their thread.

During the last few days I have posted info on 6 different threads, none of these posters have acknowledged my input or given as much as a thank you.Should I just delete all info that I have added to these threads?
