William Ross Lamont - what happened?

Born 1847 in Aberdeen to Andrew Lamont and Elizabeth Ross. William married Agnes Jopp McIntosh in 1868. They appear together on the census in 1871 (with an infant Agnes Lamond Adams), but there the trail ends. Agnes Jopp had a daughter, Isabella in 1873 and the birth certificate contains the following:

Agnes McIntosh, wife of William Ross Lamont, Ships Carpenter who she declares is not the father of the child and further that she has had no communication with him since he deserted her 17th Spetember, 1871.

Would love to hear from anyone with any info. on what happened to William. In 1906 when Agnes' daughter Jane marries, Agnes is Agnes McIntosh, wife of William Ross Lamont, now his widow.
