looking for details of my grandads death record.

He went missing then pressumed death after 7 years.

Born Henry oribine 2 April 1918 in Greenock.

Died ? maybe around 1947 as that's when my nan remarried.

They married in Luton 1937 not sure what date. Maybe recorded dead in Luton. Nans name was Sarah McCann DOB 4.6.1919

He was in the service I am told. I think he was AWOL.

I had a similar thing with my grandad - my grandmother remarried 7 years later as 'a widow'!! My grandad remarried bigamously a year after his disappearance, using a different name and rejoined the Army with his false name a year later having gone AWOL!!

I was lucky he reverted back to his original name when he dumped his second family and I was able to get all this info from his Army file.

As next of kin my dad sent off to APC Glasgow, using his full name and date of birth. If he was in the Army they will be able to tell you. With such an odd name it should be easy.

I did get one this week in the post.

I know his dad was David Oribine and his mother was Margaret Sweeney. They married 29 April 1914

I also know he had a brother william and a sister Margaret no dates for them yet.

As a child I met Margaret in the 1970's

1922 looks like the sister Margaret and 1915 looks like William.

Can we find a marriage for any of them?

I know Margaret had a daughter called Rita but I don't know if Rita was her real name as some people call Rita short for Margaret. she could be about 60 now. not sure at all as they had a hard life and it makes you look older. She had a lovely smile I remember.

I can see a Margaret born 1951 maybe thats her!

Cannot find their marriages in Greenock. You would need to order the certs for those who you think are yours. The info you get from those will give you even more info.

Also, what I have done in the past is to post a request on GR for GRO Edinburgh look up and anyone going could transcribe the info for you. Alternatively register with Scotfamtree friendly forum and they will do look ups for you and for a minimal fee let you have the info.

In my case the most success has been from contacting the local family history society and one of their researchers - again for a minimal fee - has helped me so much. Even to the extent of getting me two living relative addresses, who I have written to, I am just waiting for them to respond now, although I suppose finding out you have half-siblings you never knew you had is a bit of a shock!!

Have a look on IGI and do a search on Oribine in the British Isles. Have just had a really quick scan and there are a few offspring of a James Sweeney Oribine. The Sweeney part implies they could be related to you.

I cannot however find the married of David Oribine to Margaret Sweeney that you refer to in 1914, either in Scotland or England, I may be missing something though.

I got the information concerning David Oribine and Margaret Sweeney from My grandad birth cert.

It says married 29 April east greenock.

Looking at the deaths for Oribine I would guess Margaret Oribine who 1957 was my G Granny.
Maybe Margaret Oribine 1985 might be my auntie Maggie who I spoke of.

I also spoke of her daughter Margaret called Rite might have been born in 1951. I found her on your information also.

You have been very busy. I cant see a marriage for Maggi born 1922 died 1985. I am guessing as her daughter Margaret is recorded as a Oribine. I have updated my tree with this information.

As for the big question Henry Oribine 2 April 1918. He is still missing.........no idea at all.

Glad to have helped - had some spare credit on scotlandspeople that I had no use for, so am glad it was able to help you.

Would personally be tempted to work backwards as far as you can go, getting relatives of relatives etc etc to help you to then work forwards - get as much as you can using certificates from relatives going back as far as you can - that will then make it easier to come forward.

Even getting info on the informants on any of the death certificates you think are connected to you, could lead to living relatives that may know the answers you are seeking.

Great news! I have found Rita Oribine in Greenock, my sister went to meet her 2 weeks ago in Scotland. We hope to stay in touch.
