Wendy - I've searched the death indexes for 1944 -46 and can't find her. What years did you already check?

Once you have her death cert it will be easier to then try to find any archived newspaper articles on the incident (re the coroner's hearing). The local library to Whitehaven may keep archived newspapers on fiche but without a year of death it will be extremely tedious having to scroll through page after page of news reel for all years in the 1940s.

I think finding her death cert is the way forward. Was McKee definitely her last surname (no chance of her having re-married at any point is there?).

Woo-hoo - just went back and decided to check 1947 - and I think this is it!!

MARGARET J MCKEE, 1947,
AGED 64, WHITEHAVEN
MAR QTR,
VOL 1A PG 200

If you order that it will set you on your way to finding out more about her death.

By the way - was there a John McKee and a Violet E.W. McKee from the same family tree? Just wondering as I spotted their names in the indexes for Whitehaven. John was aged 66 and Violet 23yrs.

Regards, Athena

Wendy

Have just had a Google and found this useful website for you:

http://www.cumbria.gov.uk/archives/research/Online.asp

It says they do a historical research facility (there's an online request form but you do have to pay for the service).

How I would do this is to order the death cert first. Once you have the exact date of death (and it might even give you the date of the Coroner's report) you can then contact the Cumbrian archive service, giving them as much info as you have. They may be able to find the initial report of the incident which will have been reported within a week of her death, I should think. Then the coroner's report would follow on from that a week or two later (in most cases).

Good luck!

Wendy - the names I found of John and Violet were not from any family tree online - I spotted them listed on the death indexes as I was searching for Margaret's death.

I just wondered if they were related in any way, being that they were from Whitehaven and it's a fairly uncommon surname.

By the way - according to the Cumbrian Council website I gave above, it states that they hold the following newspaper archives:

"Whitehaven News 1856 to date held at Whitehaven "

Sorry, Wendy - suddenly got busy at work so not had a chance. I think you might be able to search the indexes for free on Ancestry if you wanted to have a look when you get time. If you can't, I'll have another go during my lunch break.

Must rush - Athena

Yes, see my post on previous page - he died 1940.

Where were you looking for his death? Ancestry or Free BMD?

I used Ancestry, too, Wendy.

Were you searching in the section called "Complete BMD Index ranges & Images 1837-1983" or was it "Partial FreeBMD Indexes & Images 1837-1983".

Just curious because it was fairly easy to find, so wondering if you were looking in the wrong section.

It's really good if you can get used to using the actual indexes rather than the transcribed version because that way you'll be able to do any birth, death or marriage look ups. The partially transcribed version only goes up to certain years and is not complete.

Hope that helps for future reference.

Best wishes - Athena
