How do I find out who ran an hotel in the 1840's

I assume that the hotel was in England or Wales?

if so, try to locate the town/city in a trade directory of the period. Historicaldirectories.org is a good place to start.

Alternatively, post some further details (Place, Hotel name etc) and see if any other members can assist.

The royal oak hotel milton road hoyland barnsley s yorks, my dad was told my mums grandparents used to run it Henry and Fanny Taylor, I cannot find any proof of this, I have searched for months

They might have old records or the brewery or other suppliers might have old records.

Local Library, local old business directories etc

The hotel is a private residence now as been for years, they have painted over the sign on the side of the wall in the last 10 years

That Henry seems to be the son of Robert, a farmer.

I wonder whether someone didn't garble something a little in the telling.

My mum is 78, and her oldest grandparent, by far, was born in 1851 -- and he was 50 when his son, my mum's father, was born in 1901.

For your mum's grandparents to have been running a pub in the 1840s ... well, you'd need to be at least as old as my mum!
