Don't know whether to say you're welcome or sorry. ;)

If you need any more pointers for searching farther back after you get the certs, just post in this thread again!

Oh -- all of this is dependent on your husband being right about 1879 and Chipping Norton.

You still might want to order the marriage certificate for the John Henry Finley you *know* is yours to confirm that all the rest of it is the right people.

Well here's some more.

I suspected spelling variations/mistakes, so I searched for George as

FIN*Y

instead of FINLEY

and sure enough. Go ahead -- search for the marriage of

FIN*Y
George
to
Ann
1865 to 1881

(I was wanting to account for the possibility of a second marriage too)

You'll definitely want to check the image to make sure the spelling mistake/variation is in the original record, and not a transcription error, before ordering the certificate.

That search will get you Ann's surname, and the certificate will get you their fathers' names ...

You're welcome again, and have fun!

Here's the household in 1891:

Ann Finley 42
Arthur Finley 19
Edwin Finley 20
George Finley 47
John Finley 11

He seems to have been the last child.

Now while you're at FreeBMD, search for the marriage of George Finlay to Ann around 1867-1871 (the outside limits being defined by their ages and the ages of their oldest child).

Hmm.

The only one I get is in Leeds. ?

So you need the birth certificate to get Ann's birth surname, to search for the marriage.

Ah, I was underestimating his age!

Do the FreeBMD search now, and you'll find his birth, right where and when you said.

Since you know the date and place from family knowledge, no need to order the marriage certificate -- just go ahead and order the birth certificate to get his parents' names.

Oops -- you're welcome!

JaneyCanuck Report 29 Jan 2008 19:15

Not seeing a birth in the index that pops up as looking like him. No John Henry Finleys specifically, or John H Finleys, were born at a time to be marrying in 1924.

Do the search at FreeBMD -- births, John Finley, say 1885 to 1908 -- and see whether any look like likely candidates, from the dates and places.

Once you have his marriage certificate with an age, you may be able to match it up to a birth. If the father's name on the birth certificate matched up with the name on the marriage certificate, you'd have your man.

You'd also have both parents' names then, and could continue your hunting back, for their marriage, for them in the censuses, etc.

If you want to know who his parents were, and when he was born, that certificate is a place to start. It should tell you his age and his father's name and maybe occupation.

You go to

http://www.freebmd.org.uk

and search for that marriage (that's where I found it in 10 seconds) -- just their surnames and given names is all you need to use -- and check the image to make sure the info has been correctly transcribed.

Then order the certificate for 7 pounds from:

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

Okay, you're in luck -- it's been transcribed:

Kingsford Annie Finley Chipping N. 3a 2585

Let's start with a date or two -- married approximately when? Born approximately when? Probably no Finleys hereabouts just now, but likely others of us who can help!
