Find Ancestors

I am just starting to research my family tree and dont really know what i should be doing.
I have so far found details about my Grandfather and grandmothers births but dont know how to expand on this so any help would be much appreciated.

So far i have:
My grandfather - JACK VICTOR THORNTON born 7 May 1923 in Dewsbury, Yorkshire. Mothers maiden name was Taylor

My Grandmother - ETHEL MAY WETTON born 27 August 1925 in Lambeth. Mothers maiden name was Nicholls. (first name possibly ethel as i seem to remember my nan was named after her mother)
My nan had a brother and they were very close in age but i have no idea of his name or birthplace. I believe my nans father was a baker and owned/worked at a bakery in Yorkshire at some point.

This is most of the info i currently have, so if anyone could help it would be wonderful. Let me know if there is anything else i need. Thanks in advance.

You don't say where you have got your information from. Do you have Jack and Ethel's marriage certificate or birth certificates?

Your grandfather's birth was registered in 1923 ist qtr in Dewesbury vol 9b page 693 which confirms his mothers maiden name was Taylor.

Your grandmothers birth was registered 1925 3rd qtr in Lambeth vol 1d page 625 giving her mothers maiden name as Nicholls.

If you can get the birth certificates of your grandparents they will give you the names of their parents.

You can use census records to find information about people living in the same household as your ancestors, but census only started in 1841 and are every 10 years up to 1901, we have to wait untill 2011 for the 1921 census to be made public.

I knew some of the info from when my nan was alive and got the rest from family. I am afraid i have no certificates whatsoever (and wouldnt know what to do!) How would i go about that?

Could these be you grandmother's siblings?

This may be Ethels parents---but not sure unless you have Ethel's Birth cert

Thank you for looking those up Barbara and Angela. I will contact my cousin and see if any of that rings any bells with him and i will apply for my nans birth certificate and see where that leads.
Is there any other info i need to find out to make things easier?
Can anyone find out anything about my grandad (jack)?

I hope this helps in some way, there possibly is more as Taylor seems to be quite a common name. However the best way to confirm Jack's parents would be to purchase his birth certificate which I think costs around £7.
